I'm guessing it involves a local preset route? I'm looking at a local company that is offering this position via driver training school.
Thanks,

City drivers generally drive day cabs and do a lot of drop and hooks. My last company the city drivers went and picked up loads and brought them to the terminal so it would be there waiting, and in some cases delivered loads. City drivers also know where to find an empty trailer if you can't find one. This is one dirty little secret I have discovered about trucking. Take care of the city drivers if your company uses them. We had one guy at my company I would give a case of candy to if I had it from a rejected load. If I was in a bad situation he sometimes would help me if I would be late on a pickup and would have my load waiting for me.

I wouldn't count on drop n hook. If you're going to work for an ltl outfit, you'll be driving backwards almost as much as forward. A lot of bumping docks, moving freight via pallet jack, surface street driving, very little highway.
This is a question better suited to your potential employer about what the job entails.fjrgerry Thanks this. -
Company I'm interested in is ABF Freight. They have a location about a mile from where I live and new driver city & OTR openings.
-
You aren't gonna do their moving division nonsense are you? I wonder if you have a choice...
-
Yes there is a huge difference between a city driver and a yard driver. In my post I was referring to a non LTL company. I have no information about the job duties of a LTL company city driver.

City driver for ABF means all the freight that came in, after it gets broken down and sorted and then reloaded on a trailer, usually a pup, then gets delivered in that terminals local area which can be a mile from the yard or 35 mi from the yard. You will also pick up outbound freight during the day and may even be in-and-out of the terminal several times during the day since inbound freight comes in all day long. Your deliveries may be in a dock with forklift or street unload off tailgate, or handtruck into an office building. Pays good lots of OT. Weekend off. Go for it.
Bob Dobalina, Sho Nuff, Longarm and 1 other person Thank this. -
City Driver means P&D (pick and delivery). Most LTL companies will use that term for it. Just like Road Driver means linhaul work.

I can't confirm this but I think one of our city drivers in Atlanta could not drive interstate because of a medical condition. He was only legal intrastate in Georgia.
