Ironically, I did the very same thing, but didn't figure it out till an hour down the road. I can't offer an excuse as to why I did it, just got up, walked around the truck 'trippin, got back in, and left out. I think the face of the guard at the gate should've warned me. Utter confusion.
What is the dumbest thing you've done while trucking?

I knew I shouldn't have read this thread...
So, I work locally delivering clear and marked diesel to all kinds of customers, mostly construction sites. I was off for a few weeks due to an appendectomy and even before that I only had two weeks of training. This was my first week back on the job so my boss asked me to ride with other drivers to refresh my memory.
We get to a construction site earlier and there's a large tank to fill. Our hose has a high flow and a low flow switch. The high flow pumps about 350 litres/92 gallons per minute. It requires two hands at all times. I'm using the high flow to pump marked diesel into the tank, but I can't really see inside the tank. There was a little ledge near the bottom that I was going to use to propel myself over the tank opening, except I took my hand off the hose for a brief second.
Next thing I knew, the hose comes FLYING out of the hole and starts snaking through the air like a firefighter hose. Diesel is spraying all over the place wildly and I'm scrambling to get the hose under control. The other driver had been talking to a site foreman and when he looks over he sees me in scramble mode, trying to fight the hose and get the nozzle turned off. Luckily he hit the emergency shut-off switch before any more damage was done. Diesel sprayed all over the tank, myself, the ground and other pieces of equipment. I'd estimate about 50 litres must have came out of the hose before it got under control.
After all was said and done, the site foreman and the other driver were pissing themselves laughing. I had, and still have, a bruised ego and felt really embarrassed. I'm never reading another 'dumbest thing you've done thread' again.zoekatya, Rugerfan, Ebola Guy and 1 other person Thank this. -
You know, after reading all these admissions of screwing up, it occured to me I have been in the exact situation in almost all of these "problems". From driving off with a fuel hose in my tank, going the wrong way, or wrong place, wrong time, ornot setting parking brake, and so on. I guess we all make the same mistakes. That's trucking.

It was 4am, I had been driving for ten hours and was ready to hand it over to my co-driver and get some sleep. I get off an exit somewhere in Missouri and see that there's a fast food restaurant with truck parking. It's pitch black and I see what looks like the drive way, I make my turn and then *boom*, I'm stuck. I get out and see that I'd driven into grass and over a curb. Couldn't get out of it. Had to call the company and they sent a wrecker to pull me out. An officer showed up before I got pulled out and took my info and went into the restaurant. I was ######## myself. Officer came back out and told me, "this has happened more than once here" and didn't write up a report. Lesson learned, looks can always be deceiving, always make sure to be 100% certain before making a decision while driving a truck.

Several years ago at the landfill. Traveling well above the posted speed limit of 15 mph. Hit a few pot holes, Bounced out of the seat. Hit my chin on the shifter and seen the wonderful underneath of the dash. The truck was still straight on the muddy road, Pulled self onto seat. Thinking, yup that just happened. Next journey though landfill lowered the seat and continued the same speed as before, no problems after that. Screw seat belts
