I know why I can't compete with independents based off some replies on this thread. I'd be at $1,250 + fuel. Guess that's why I seldom land longer term round trip projects but when I do they're not on a razor's edge.

You would hate to see what dry box rates are down here. A friend got really excited about landing a deal Orlando to Miami and back for $800, 3 of his trucks a day. That's 500 miles a day right there at that was back in $4 a gallon fuel days. He took me out to lunch to celebrate!

What would some on here run it for and what can you get it fun. Depending on the market that is a $650 + fuel load. But that is changing and suspect reliable capacity is going to drive that north of $800 + fuel this year.

We just landed a similar account that pays much better on the R/T plus the ability to reload. And we found a dedicated return that will sweeten the deal. Same miles out of Chicago that is cheap but have to consider the market.

don't look at just the one load. look at the next load. look at where the load is going and what the rates are for that area. sometimes you have to take a cheaper load to put yourself in a area that will pay a high rate so that you can come out with a good average. I do fine if I keep in the $2.00 area. and I have consistent freight . the hole trick is fuel. I run low miles at high rate. the money is made in lower fuel cost. 400 miles or less.

    I try to get $2/mile.

Last trip I averaged 1.80 for 6300.. in my opinion it's respectable (I haul a dry van)

and make sure you calculate your mileage accurately, door to door, not pc miles or hhg miles or any of that other "dispatcher friendly" nonsense

unless you get free fuel to drive 20 - 50 miles

I'm pretty hard on myself, I subtract end of week odometer from start and if gross doesn't at least end up $2 I'm pretty upset

    EZX1100 Thanks this.

Not trying to be snarky, but I really think you are cutting yourself short. I pulled one load Last year under 2 bucks a mile. With all the extra expenses and headaches of having your authority, you need to be doing Atleast 25 percent more just to be even. Especially considering where you are at vs where I'm at.

It's pathetic isn't it? I know guys down here that will put 8 ft tarps on every load for that rate.
