I understand completly. Brokers can be the biggest ########## out there. They are a middle man trying to cover the margins and make money in an industry that doesnt have room. I am wanting to get out of it for those reasons. I am doing it part time and my brother runs it full time. Anybody ever ran a used Marten Transport truck?

I would stay away from Maren's stuff ...for quite a while they were having major mechanical issues.........look more to Celadon's used stuff or check out Lone Mountain Leasing.....

I would check into Ryder as well. They maintain their equipment pretty well. In addition they have all the service records as well. I would buy a Ryder truck or one that has meticulous service records before a marten truck.

Not trying to be negative on this. However if you are new in this industry you are in trouble before you even start.

I see that you posted that you have been a freight broker for 2 years. Trust me you make more money per load then the trucking company.

Things you need to keep in mind is that "repair bills will kill you" unless you are buying trucks with warranty.

Drivers are a funny bunch. They will make you or brake you.

The bottom line is it's the wrong time to jump into trucking. I would wait until the rates pick up.

The best trucks to buy would be an International. Reason being International followed by Freightliner sold the most trucks. Therefore there is lot's of parts available especially in the used sector.

Hi Loc: Aint here to take sides, just a couple of thoughts.
To your first question, i would likely go with Freightliners...:biggrin_25521: Not a FL fan for personal reasons and preferences, but for what you are attempting, they would be my choice.
Next, members have given you many thoughts here, some kind, some very abrasive(very much like trucking). Every one of them is correct in their own way. As has been said, a very tough time to start anything with trucking.
Best wishes, whatever you decide and do...:biggrin_25514:

the most reliable truck is one that sits in the drive way there all going to break at one point or another depends alot on the guy that drove it or many guys that drove so hard to say but good luck on your search

With the right driver and maitenance program you can make anything last but its the little issues that lead to bigger ones that will kill you in the end and a driver who doesent care dosent do you much good either

LOC.. You can make your business work. this country was built on people taking risks. calculated risks when possible. I started in trucking over 11 years ago. still in it. still driving same truck. I had 20 year veteran truckers tell me not to do it. I did it. it worked for me. I had to make it work for me though. a lot of good decisions, some luck too. most success stories come from failure. not total failure, but some sort of failure at one point, that taught the entrepreneur more than if he had immediate success. I have made mistakes. some cost me some did not. but I did it. I am here. you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. don't dismiss all criticism, just what does not apply to you or your situation. people starting out trying to be productive members of society needs to be encouraged. we have enough folks that never try & the taxpayers are supporting them. thank you for having the desire to try. if you fail, GET back on your feet & never give up. :yes2557:

Excellent words right there, HH. The working man is outnumbered by people looking for the "freeride" on the system.

Loc If you have a little bit of time on your hands, jump out there and get yourself a CDL-A. It will immediately open your eyes to many issues out there in the trucking world, and who knows, you might even want to push one of those big trucks down the road every now and then.
