One reason the pay is low is because the trucking company has to pay the union "X" amount of dollars every week for each driver.
If the job you're considering is under the Central States Pension Fund, then run away. That pension fund is bankrupt. The money vanished. It''s all on Google. Decades of drivers money going into that retirement fund and now the money is gone.

Same process to voting the union in, gotta organize to vote them out. Usually even harder

Have you received any letters from Central States about reduction of benefits? The government recently refused to bail out the pension fund. The union officials say the fund will last 10 more years, but the auditors say it won't be anywhere near that long. They're robbing Peter to pay Paul now just to scrape up the monthly benefits payments.

Jabber I remember your screen name from a few years back. What have you been up to buddy? Came off the road?

And like the others said, if the pay and benefits are crap don't take the job. That means the union is only looking to steal a chunk of your check each week, not make life better for you.

Well...there are unions and then there are Unions. Some are there to work for you and some are there to keep you down.Example, union rep gets a nice payoff to keep wages down.

Bottom line unions benefit lazy people.
The people who work and don't call in sick all of the time don't have much use for a union

    Chinatown and spyder7723 Thank this.

weird, because they still write you up and give you punishment if you call in sick. or leave work early because you're sick

In addition, the territory of Guam also has right-to-work laws, and employees of the US Federal Government have the right to choose whether or not to join their respective unions.
