The safest way to shift is the one where you don't miss.

You can always ask the examiner if floating is OK or should you double clutch ? You may be surprised. For instance, the Ca. DMV handbook doesn't say anything driver must double clutch when doing a road test. It's a common misconception that testees must double clutch. Not so. You just have to pass the road test and show the examiner you are in complete control of the vehicle at all times. It's OK to talk with the examiner prior to your test. Most have never driven a truck ! It's not "you against them" . luck to ya.

First off, the CDL book has NEVER driven a truck. Second, Mr. Safety may actually be a multi-million mile driver. BUT, he isn't in the truck with you, when the excrement hits the oscillator.
Two things in this business, anytime someone says either "never," or "always," take anything they say after that, with a grain of salt.QuietStorm, A21CAV, kemosabi49 and 4 others Thank this. -
I'd double clutch to pass the test. Got on my own then started floating. 0 accidents in 11 1/2 years of trucking all floating. I drive mostly i80 Wyoming and i70 in the mountains snow or shine. If I had to take a drive test today that involved double clutching only I'd probably fail.

Tbh, Eaton Fuller have made every transmission I have ever used and they themselves will tell you that their equipment isn't made to be floated. They recommend double clutch.
My knees don't give a #### what they were made to do, I'm a floater for life now. I will say though, something's double clutching is mandatory. As said above, to take the truck out of gear. -
You can't possibly think that i was suggesting following the letter of the law with my post.Big Don Thanks this. -
It has nothing to do with safety. Floating properly is easier on the clutch and transmission. What the company was really trying to tell the OP is if you can't properly drive the truck without referring to what DMV says, then you most likely don't have enough experience to drive for us. Has nothing to do with safety, they just want their equipment taken care of.

DO NOT EVEN REPLY TO THEM.
Their reasoning screams micromanageming the drivers. On a road test anyone looks at your shifting outside of doing it safe for the truck and the situation, nothing else, is not worth working for.Big Don, Dave_in_AZ, Lepton1 and 1 other person Thank this. -
