I am a recent grad getting ready to find a company to go otr with. I have some pre hires, but as we know that is nothing in stone. I am starting to look at being a team driver. At first I shunned the idea of it...but now I am rethinking this.
I am ready to pay my dues and go otr.. I am a daughter of old school retired trucker (he drove for 57 years!) and he seems to think I should not even look at that option. He has been out of a truck now for about 5 years..but has A LOT to say.
In my mind after training this may be a better option... miles, more time to learn the ropes? Correct me if I am wrong, please.. and if you have any thoughts please share =)
Pros & Cons anyone?
Cheers! ~PJ

You will be a team while you are in training, so you'll get a good idea if you will like it or not.
To me, the truck is smallish for a single driver, let alone two.
Also, I don't like to try and sleep while the truck is moving.
It's not so much the motion, except on very bumpy roads, but the notion of being asleep with someone else driving. I might wake up dead. -
ditto to what moosetek13 said. I enjoyed the money, but after 2 months i decided that sleep was more important. Now I drive local for less money but enjoy work alot more. Good luck.

i cant stand sharing a truck. it is my truck. besides, i slept like crap on a stick in a moving truck when i was paying my dues. i prefer it sitting while i am sleeping.
MNdriver, Jimmeyjack and pjay Thank this. -
Yeah I teamed after training and its rough and my teammate wasnt a bad guy. Its just way too small quarters in there

pjay IMO teaming should be with your S/O, otherwise its a PITA. Besides what the others have posted here's another scenerio. Your hometime very likely be screwed up,espeically if the both of you live 500+ miles apart.

I like running team but do it with my good friend that I knew years before I ever drove. Probably wouldn't team with anyone else. It's a small space so you have to get along well. If you move a lot though you will hardly see the other driver.
It really depends on you, who you team with and your company. If the company can't move a team well there's really no point. If you do move a lot you'll probably get worn out. We ran just under 27,000 miles last month and we were both beat. I sleep well overall while moving but there will always be nights that you don't sleep well. When you're stopped and having trouble sleeping it's not as hard to finally snooze out. When you're rolling down the road and having trouble it just makes it that much harder.
It's not easy but I still enjoy it personally. It's really nice not having to join the circus of trying to find a spot to park every night.pjay Thanks this. -

I like teaming for the most part. The hardest part is finding a decent co-driver. Some people can't sleep in a moving truck. I now have a hard time sleeping in one that's sitting still.

I have some advise on team driving. I began as a team driver in 2004 and after letting CRST put thugs in my truck left it for a solo career.
However, I began running team again last January because of an awesome job offer.
So, I would say
you have to find a person that is as motivated as you to make it work. with that being said, you can expect more pay and miles as a team. but you have to learn to sleep in a moving truck and that can be a trick. I use Tylenol pm.
its nice to know that someone has your back. Is willing to spot for you if needed and hopefully they respect your space.
I hope you find the right person. It is really important.
good luck
