What is to stop an overweight tractor-trailer from avoiding all weigh stations?

Yes!

 

I was inside the Sheridan WY POE once (have to go in with paperwork for the livestock) and a truck blew the scale going toward MT. They had all the info from his Prepass and all they did was call ahead to the scale at Laurel MT and tell them that he failed to stop at the port. Now there is a chance the driver didn’t go west on 90 to Laurel but if he did they were waiting for him.

 

Are you just speculating, or do you know that? If you know, how do you know?

Makes me think of the weigh station in Boise City OK. When it's open, everyone going along the 287 is supposed to stop in there. But if we're going 385 through town to the 287 north, or 287 south to 385 going back through town, never get hassled for not going through the scale. I've had a couple of weigh station troopers going the opposite direction a few times and even ride behind me on the 385 in Boise City and they just went right on their way.

Of course I think they're aware that milk tankers are heading to Dalhart(Hilmar Cheese and various dairy barns down there) and sticking to route. If it were a random, van or reefer trailer taking our route, they'd probably get nailed.

 

I have never been overweight on my steers. Drives, sure, tandems definitely, but steers? Something is wrong with the scale!

 

I go into a lot of scale houses with oversized loads. Some have beautiful high def pictures of trucks approaching their scales with truck info listed with the picture. All states are different, but most are high tech, I say go for it and let us know what happens.
Back in the 70’s I know someone that stopped by the Stratford, Mo scale open sign, pulled the rope to make it say closed, waited for a couple trucks to pass and went on his way. The good old days.

 

Back in the day it was pretty common to backroad around scales.
But come on..I get we got to have some laws and enforcement on it, but they'd have the public think that if a truck was 2 grand over it's gonna be collapsing bridges as it crosses them and leave the roads crumbling.

 

I got popped going around that scale. Brought me back and paid a nice fine if I recall...oops
