    OK...New trucks ... ok
Getting above 8 mpg is a good thing...I could only wish... I am getting no more than 6.5 mpg per annual average 2009 ISX 400 HP.

Not a newer truck, but still aero. 2003 Volvo with N14
My last two weeks trips, all hand calculated. Running 65-70 depending on speed limit.
Detroit, MI to Columbia, SC 30klb 6.7mpg
Columbia, SC to Albany, NY 15klb 7.9mpg
    Albany, NY-Detroit, MI 43klb 6.5mpg
Detroit, MI to Denver, CO 40klb 6mpg
Denver to Grand Forks, ND 5klb 7.7mpg
Grand Forks, ND to Detroit, MI 43klb 6.7mpg

I have another Volvo with Detroit 12.7. That truck is even better. With light loads it gets like 0.7mpg better and with heavier loads like 0.3mpg.
    What's funny, n14 has 525/1850, 13 speed and 3.42 rears.
Detroit has 570/1950, 10 speed and 3.58 rears. I think if it had the same tranny and rears as n14 truck, it would have been a a solid 1 mpg better

I am currently in a 2020 Volvo 760. I run at about 65 mph. I get 8.2 miles to the gallon and just about every load I haul is heavy as ####.

Yeah you'll never get the same miles per gallon hauling through mountain ranges and passes, as you would running in relatively flat country, also how much weight your towing and what speeds you run at although in Cali that'd be 55 huh? so you should be getting a pretty good mpg rate same in Oregon and Washington with the lower speeds. Other factors can include the kind of exhaust system, and air intakes you have. How clean your injectors are, if your running in very dry conditions particularly through Cali, UT, AZ, NM its amazing just how much dust is in the air, plus other pollution which can clog up your air filters, so give your air cleaners a blow out maybe once a week to free up the air intake.

The mountain ranges arent really a killer in my opinion. I did 6.5 last year running nothing but flatbed in the northwest and max gross every load... Doing otr a couple years ago it was about the same. The wind is the biggest killer of fuel mileage..the mountain ranges u burn fuel but u get up and over them then its back to regular road..This last load I just got 7mpg arizona to Washington. With my rgn trailer. 65k pounds roughly. Ill take it.
