Hauling 44k is definitely not heavy.
I am hauling 140,000lbs (albiet for only half of the trip). I am running the Mack MP8 which is a 13 litre engine. It provides enough power as I am hauling on flat roads. My mileage averages around 5.5MPG for the day. This includes going down empty (total weight around 44,000 lbs) and the dash says around 7.5mpg coming back up loaded I am in the 4-4.5 mpg. Then there is an hour or so that the engine will run at a high idle for the blower (around 1000rpm). When I drive, i will cut back my speed by 1-2kph when loaded to try and save a bit fuel. It cost me less than 5 minutes a trip.
If I was on more hilly terrain I would defintely not have enough power. I know another company heavy hauling through the rockies and is using 550HP ISXs as they will have more power.
With EPA 2014 coming out and the lower CO2 requirements that entails engine manufacturers will have to increase the power density they are producing from there engines. That will lead to lower displacement engines in the future. Which will also save you weight as they dont weigh as much. You save about 300lbs when you go from a 15 litre engine down to a 13 litre. Its not a lot of weight but when so many guys are limited to hauling just 80,000 lbs it can make a small difference.
what kind of mpg do you get?

Just computed my mpg over 5200 miles. 2012 Pete 386. 10sp trans, 455MX, 22.5 low profile Bridgestone rubber. I ran in the central states with loads from 15,000 to 44,000 with a dry van. I got 7.2 and I also have a Tri-Pac. Speeds between 60 and 70.

2011 prostar isx15, 53-ft dry-vans, anything from 8k - 45k, usually under 30k tho. 48-states, I DRIVE UNDER 60-MPH ALMOST ALWAYS!...
I went from a stock solid 6.8mpg to a solid 7.2 mpg WITH egr, when I got everything right on the engine. Disabling EGR got me to 8.2 mpg, then a boost gauge (re-training my driving habits) got me to 8.9-9.1 mpg. After the delete, and re-mapping the turbo to how I drive, I am now touching 9.4-9.7 (remember, I had no EGR at 9.1, before the re-map). Then finally, I arrived where I am at now, with the +8 timing shift where I am now bouncing from 8.9 on a bad day to +11,+11.5 sometimes with light loads. My record with the truck is 14.1 MPG, and bobtail now, I get 15.5-16.2 depending on terrain, where I used to only get 10-10.5.
These are the conditions where I got 14.1-mpg (my highest fuelling record so far under a load)...
About a month ago, I got a potato-chip load My truck (2011 prostar,ISX-15,560k miles on odo, just had new 50-wt gear oil replaced in all the gearboxes 2 days earlier), A 53-foot dry-van with skirts and fairly new fuel efficient tires, 8000-lb in trailer, driving on I-5 south, no headwind, flat as a pancake thru California, 54-56 MPH, I went 505.5 miles on 35.8 gallons.
My fuel mileage is not always 9+/10+, 2 days ago, when I met texasmorrell , I fuelled and it was only 8.94 MPG there in Dallas when I left out. I had 26k in 53-ft trailer, fuelled in Atlanta about 1.5 days before that fuel stop, and had run my APU for about 7 hours in Dallas while helping texasmorrell, and had run the APU for about 9 hours the day before, while waiting on the load. I still have to say, that is pretty good. My trip MPG (usually within 1 mpg or so), was showing 11.2 mpg on the dash, so its likely without the APU fuel consumption, I got (guessing), 9.6 or so.
....The nicest thing i think,..besides the money savings of coarse,...is I can now go 1700+ miles sometimes between fuel stops and still have 1/8-1/4 tank left. Anyone can dispute my numbers, but how do you explain 1700+ miles and still that much fuel left over, when I only have 190-gal fuel capacity on the truck.

1st Quarter IFTA = 9.41 mpg
2nd Quarter IFTA = 9.05 mpg
I do power only moves with all kinds of trailers from brand new empty dry vans to oversize/overweight construction equipment and I do bobtail some between loads. Most of my heavy oversize/overweight moves are usually during the 2nd and 3rd quarters that makes my fuel mileage drop from the other 2 quarters. I drive 57 mph and I am very displined in my driving habits to be very conservative that with my mechanical mods has changed my operations fuel mileage from the low 6's mpg to my current 9's mpg.
You would be surprised how much it adds to the bottom line going from low 6's mpg to 9+ mpg.
Note: I also have solar panels to keep batteries charged and reduce idling.
jlkklj777 and DrivingForceBehindYou Thank this. -
Where did you get the solar pannel(s), how do they hold up against the vibration, etc. Been thinking about that myself.
-
I recommend going with the newer flexiable solar panels that just peel and stick. There is an entire thread I posted on here about them: http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...7144-solar-panels-on-trucks-and-trailers.html -
heres my latest...12.7 3.42 13. loose to much money to slow down...
