Fair enough, Martin. That makes sense. I don't really need a lot of coaching on the common sense stuff either. What the scangauge did for me was help me fine tune a few things. Really on an ongoing basis. The first one was downshifting a lot sooner on gentle grades. More importantly the difference of just a few psi of boost making the difference between 7+ mpg and <5. All I'm saying is, for the average guy trying to squeeze out a little mpg improvement, it ain't a bad deal. Even if KR is hawking them. I would say the same of any equivalent device, for example the code reader you're using.
]My 2010 Volvo 780 w/ D13 engine & automatic 12 speed transmission got 9-10 mpg running 55 mph. My 2014 Freightshaker Cascadia Evolution (sounds fancy, right?) with a DD15 (eh, I think), 10 speed stick gets 7.8 mph at 67 or 8.5 at 55.[/QUOTE] This Volvo D13 is maybe the best motor on on fuel on thr matket .My dash today, shows 8.8 mpg, after a trip from Toronto to Laredo, Tx; temperatures below freezing first 10 hours, 18,000 lbs load/dry van with wind skirts; Volvo 780/2008/Volvo D13: limited to 65 mph,(Ontariio law). But after dozens of measurements from pump to pump,I would say the dash is off about 0.3 mpg.Bought it new in ,'07 original motor 1,253 000 miles ,as you can see, still running great . I drove a 2012 freightliner cascadia with dd15 and got 7.9 mpg at 69 mph. It was 10 sp manuel and 2.53 gear ratio.
Lower the boost, the better the MPG, good rule of thumb. In states like Ia, on I80 with the rolling hills, do not use the cruise, let it roll a little down the hill, then gently apply boost going up. A LOT better than the cruise giving full boost at the bottom of the incline. Things like that will get you MPG all day long. As I said though, in my case, it is all but a lost cause. Same load, same roads, a Cascadia with the same drive train got the same MPG as my Star heading out to Ca, and back. Thus why I didn't bother this time around with an aerodynamic truck for my operation. Martin
I-80, my home road throughout the country. Ohio and PA and most likely to see those when I head to IA.
I've liked Volvo's fuel economy since '03. Now that they're getting a larger market share, they're starting to lose the stigma of maintenance nightmare because more shops are opening up for them so there's less ridiculously large tow bills (not to mention more reliable engines & trannies than previous models). If memory serves, Volvo also led the way in aerodynamic design back in the day, which the other truck manufacturers latched onto after seeing the benefits.
2012 Freightliner Cascadia last week 6.75 no loads over 30,000 under 15% idle this week 6.97 no loads over 30,000 10% idle
