I don't drive a big rig at the moment, but I do have an '01 Dodge Cummins that I haul cattle with. I've installed a Bully Dog product and have sign a 2 to 3 MPG improvement over stock. I've heard that they have developed something similar for the big rig market similar to what Pittsburgh Power has.
what kind of mpg do you get?

Well said Brick!
Here's mine
2003 W900L, C-15 CAT propably over 1000hp at the engine, 18 speed, 3.55s, 290"wb with a 48' spread axle reefer. Always 80,000lbs if not more, with about 4 feet in between sleeper and trailer, yes very un-aerodynamic.
Last trip from west coast and back i got 5.7mpg, with a very hot pyro reading do to turbo not pushing enough air for new ecm. With new turbo i bet ill be around 6mpg. This is pulling a very non aerodynamic reefer 4500 mile round trip -
2008, 387, Cummins 450, 355 Rear, 13 Speed Reefer , 62mph Top.
Heavy Most All The Time
6.3 From Or. To Denver, And 6.85 To Memphis. -

Each truck is set up differently and no 2 drivers will drive the same either. I was hoping to actually glean some consistent info on which motor performed the best as far as mpgs in general.
So far it seems cats are at the bottom of the barrell for fuel economy. I place Volvos next then probably Cummins and Detroit from (worst to best).
From my personal experiences Detroits have performed better than the Cummins but I do not think I have ever gotten a 7 mpg rating or higher unless I was bobtailing. Thats not to say it can't be done, just that I haven't.Click to expand...
Are you absolutely certain about your claims I've highlighted in bold??????
Brickman said: ↑And some folks hate on large cars for their MPGs??????????????????????
And brag on their volvos??????????????????????????? WTH is wrong with ya'll's mileage?
2000 W900, 500 CAT, 13 spd, 3.55 rears, Weight 40,000 empty, never over 72,000 loaded, run 75 most of the time, running WY, CO, and NM, lots of wind to push in these states, pulling an open car hauler... very non- aero.
5.6 to 5.8 regular, I've seen as high as 6.3.
I do not baby the throttle at all, and I do VERY LITTLE idling.Click to expand...
Now I'm not a rocket scientist, I'm not even a college grad but my hick town high school edumacation tells me that your numbers on a volvo are WORSE than mine with a large car with a CAT.
I currently drive a 2006 Volvo 610, 430 hp Volvo engine (not sure of the rears), 10 speed automatic trans, about 25,000 to 35,000 lbs, 53' dry van, traveling 60 to 70 mph, operating between Pa and Ca, idling about 7 hours per night (no apu). Best mpg to date is 5.00 usually closer to 4.7 though.Click to expand...
I'm feeding MORE horses, hauling more weight and running a lot harder. CATs can get good MPGs. It depends a lot on the driver and some luck like I'm currently having.
and
My truck is Volvo VN670 with VED16,535HP,1850LBS torque,18 speed Eaton Fuller,3.73:1 rears.Hauling 40' reefer containers on triaxle chassi with belly genset,average gross 85,000 to 97,000lbs from Vancouver,BC to Calgary,AB and back(90% Rocky mountains),average speed 65MPH,idle 2 to 5 hours a day.Currently 4.9MPG,summer time 5.1 MPG.Click to expand...
This rig is pulling more weight than I usually do, but I don't think I would see much different MPGs if I was running this sort of route. -
I drive a 2007 Silverado, I get 14 city and 19 highway, around 14 or less in 4 wheel drive. My husband drives a 2000 Chevy Venture he gets 20 highway.

People who bag on CATs have to realize that most of your "bad" millage with a CAT is achieved with large cars, sine 80% of your long nose trucks are CAT powered and you're vacum cleaners are detroit, vulva, whatever. You stick a 550hp CAT in a vacum cleaner century and it will get 7mpg......... If spec'd right ofcourse
Jerry82 Thanks this. -
Oh and when i was pulling trains in MI grossing 160K+lbs i would get 5mpg out of my 550 stock CAT. Guys with detroits, who were always complaining about lack of power with the weight, would get 3.5-4mpg.
Jerry82 Thanks this. -

A century radiator is going to have a hard time keeping the power house that is a CAT cool enough. A C12 or C13 maybe, but certainly not a C15 pounding the ground. -
Nah ive seen some, they got those high-flo radiators, they can handle them. Just like the older 387s half of the grill opening was the rad half was the intercooler.
