You can get loads that pay $2.50-3.00 but it either needs to be b/c of the broker being in a jam, or direct freight is the only way that I make 3-4$ per mile on a steady basis. Step-deck speciality work also pays well, but that's a lot more time invested.

while this little window of opportunity still exists to run paper logs I've been doing pretty well knocking down some good rates when others do not have the hours left. Suits me because I don't like to start early if I don't have to anyway. Avoid starting your clock in the morning and book loads in the afternoon if possible for better rates.
My only other trick lately is just to rely on experience, certain products, certain shippers, etc... a little bell goes off in my head and I remember the rates my company got for these items when I was a company driver. Had a load last weekend like that, I told the broker the rates we used to get on those shipments and she explained they had a contract rate and could only pay that amount. Thanked her, hung up, and sure enough about an hour later the load popped up by another broker and I got nearly double the "contract rate".
But I don't always get stuff like that, right now I delivered a load from MO to SC for $1.90 and going back to KC for a pinch over $2, that'll do pig. -
I just booked a load from south central Florida(60 miles from the house)to north Carolina for 2.15 mile( to the truck after carriers cut, not the greatest rate but hey it's the Florida market. doesn't load till Friday am, so I'll be just grabbing it and back home till Sunday afternoon.

Dry Van chiming in...The run is a milk run and it is 3 days worth of work dedicated..The total round is 1250 ''hub'' miles and 15000 lbs or less and pays 3,800.00 Gross..If you use L/S Miles and the way the crow flys it is much more but i am a realist and like to put exact numbers down....My take is around 2,000 to the dinner table after L/S CUT and Fuel....If i want i can run short hops in my 4 days off if i want for extra $..
