What charecteristics do you really look for in a trucking comapny? I am talking OTR trucking companies here. Is it simply a pay check? Does nice looking late model equipment influence your decision? Howabout amenities made available to drivers? (Xm Radio, GPS, Built in fridges) If you could imagine the perfect company, or you drive for the perfect company, explain some of the things (realisticly) that are being done or can be done that help you take more pride in your job. Do you appreciate safety bonuses? Fuel Bonuses? Lets talk about what companies are offering that really make you proud to work for them. Anything you can think of. Thanks Guys

    Short list....in no specific order.

    1. Pay, it doesn't need to be 6 figures. But I want to be compensated for my time and effort. All of it.

    2. Respect -- This includes my family. My family is as much a part of this job, as I am.

    3. Listen to me when I'm speaking. I don't speak without reason. And I don't stutter. If I tell you I need to be home for any reason on Friday...By god I mean Friday....not Friday night.

    4. Hometime -- I would like a more flexible work schedule. Although this is almost impossible without taking a casual position.

Man all of you guys sure can complain but none of you can really tell me what makes you happy about the company you work for? What good things do they do? What is special about your equipment..?

Well; lets see what is the best way for a newbie who is complaining about drivers complaining to find out about makes a driver happy? Me thinks that 1st hand knowledge is the most educating...:biggrin_2559:

I am not over the road but if I am not producing, I have to be detained for 1 hour before I start getting paid. I would be tickled pink with my company if they would start paying me detention pay from the time I get there, if I am not producing.
If I was over the road away from my family I would want to be kept rolling and comfortable sleeping conditions while I am on my break. Like being able to idle or have an APU to heat or cool the truck

Thank you.. So driver like Apu's on the trucks? Any other feedback.. Detention has always been a huge problem in the trucking industry, I see it each and every day. I believe the problem does not always lie with the trucking company, many times I believe the brokers/customers are the ones who will not cough up the excess money for detention for companies to pay their drivers. They sure are quick to dock ya 50-100 bucks for a missed appointment though!! Should late appointments be the drivers responsibility to pay? Thoughts?

NOTarps, I find it interesting that you believe I am a newbie by what you read on the top of my posting. I will have you know my trucks ran in upwards of 3.5million miles last year, the only problem is I cannot speak for the mass of drivers as to what makes them happy! This is an educational exercise for myself as all of the new technology is coming out and what really matters to drivers inside the truck and things their companies are offering. I know what makes me happy, I am around it everyday and have been as many years as I can remember. Have a nice day NOTarps and try to be helpful in your next post.

I guess I have graduated. Ive always made money. I could care less about respect. I go home when I want to go home...what the hell is "hometime"...the hours that some dispatcher schedules you to be at the house?

I am at my current company right now because I like the drivers. Bottom line is youre not going to win the big game without a good team behind you.

When a trucking company advertises teamwork, theyre talking about you the driver, your dispatcher, and the load planner. When I am talking about teamwork, I'm refering to a group of drivers working together along with trusted dispatchers, all in close contact.

You claim to have trucks and you come here to ask what makes a driver happy. How about a boss that thinks about the drivers future, welfare, pay, good training, excellent equipment, no hassles to fix problems, no hassles at home because there's a good medical and dental benefits in place, stand behind or backup what the drivers say, or better yet ask your own drivers. There's many more but the best thing you could do is hire a manager that knows the job, maybe promote within.
