If I have a tractor pick up a reefer trailer on the road, what will it take to be able to use the trailer for a load? I have a small trucking company but just not sure about this question. I want my tractor to pick up a trailer that is for sale but not sure if I have to bring it back home empty or if I can figure a way to at least start making $$$ with it. Any help would be appreciated.... thanks!

If you're buying the trailer, you'll have to register and plate it before hauling any loads. IRP registration at the same place you registered your tractor.

The trailer will require an annual inspection that is no longer than year old before going on a public roadway.

i dont know how other states do it but in ohio you dont have to register a trailer on irp i just buy a regular trailer plate at the bmv. you might be able to get a temp tag with just the sales slip and haul a load to get it home.

Yeah, that is exactly what I'm wondering. I hate to dead head it home if I don't have to. And this is the perfect time for me to add a trailer cause one is broke down 1000 plus miles from home, sitting in a trailer repair shop, waiting on parts. And will be awhile before it's done.

You don't need IRP for the trailer. Just get a temp plate from your home state or the dealer and haul away.

We bought a trailer in Utah from Utility and got a 60 day temp plate from the dealer. He told us it was OK to haul stuff; others were saying its illegal. I booked a load to Cali from Utah and on the way there it was pulled over by DOT and given a Level 1 inspection. no violations...got the sticker :biggrin_25525:, Then booked a load from Cali to NY still on the temp plate. No problems.... mabe just got lucky? the dealer was telling me to use the plate till the 60 days expired but i didnt want to risk it.

I bought a trailer a few months ago and the dealer gave me a temp tag. I ran the temp tag for about a month til I had time to get the trailer registered. Went through an inspection in NM and no issues. I don't see any reason you should have to deadhead back - get a temp tag and make some money to pay for that new trailer!

You can haul on a temp tag, Have 12 trailers with temps on them and they are running every day until the tags show up.

Couple of years ago had a Mi DOT pull me behind the scale with a temp tag and asked me to bring the tag in for her to see. Told her it was taped to the trailer but she made me bring it in any way. After she decided it was good and i could leave i asked what i was supposed to do with it now since its to darn cold and wet for tape to stick now. She wasnt sure what i should do with it after that so i just tossed it on the dash and got out of there.
