Pre regen lasts longer.Dd15 is good for 1.2 mil if serviced properly.Whereas 60 series 2mil easy.

First carrier I worked at had (2) '68 Brockway 361's with 318 Detroit diesels. One had the same driver since new and was overhauled at over 600K.

The other had seen numerous drivers and was on it's second overhaul at 500K. Both were old and tired by the early 70's

It depends on the driver(s) as well as the maintenance program.

Either way; buying a truck with over 500K means starting to save for the inevitable need to overhaul.

I’m in the process of overhauling a pre emissions ISX with DOHC.

    It’s a 2005 model in a dump truck with 753,000 kms (470,000 miles) and 27,000 hours.

At the average hours to kms a highway truck would go, that would about 2 million k or 1.3 million miles.

    So not bad at all.

The truck came into shop with an incredible amount of blow by that pushed oil out.

Upon tear down, the valve train cam shaft and one rocker are trashed.

Cam bearings are down to copper.

The head needs a full rebuild.

All 6 pistons had broken rings.

All the main bearings are down to copper.

The thrust bearing was about to spin in the bore which will eventually cause a seizure or a rod through the block.

Took oil pump apart, it’s garbage. Metal (likely camshaft material) went through it.

This was a running truck when it came in for the overhaul. It was still hauling loads up til then.

    BackwoodsGA:

I am finding Detroit’s to be pretty decent engines.

I’ve not worked on one yet.
