"Driver! Pull to the right an bring all of your paperwork!"
I just passed my first inspection, but it left me with more questions than answers.
What needs paperwork, and how long do I retain a record of it being on my truck?
Do I need paperwork for loads that go between two farms, under the same company name as the truck? What if those loads have customers names on the boxes already, or what about farm supplies being shipped back and forth?
I gave the officer my paperwork for a load of boxes I had, but he didn't think it odd that I had the 'reefer unit running, or bother looking over the boxes, for the rest of the load.
I tried asking the officer these questions, but he all but threw me out the door when I was done. He wasn't much help.
What needs paperwork?

He was just trying to make his quota for the day so don't push your luck by asking questions.
I've been signed off on a full inspection when really all he did was check my lights and 4-way flashers.
This gave him a break and me a break which I appreciated.GiantBeard Thanks this. -
I take everything in with me and let the LEO decide what he wants to look at. Manifest, BOL, permit book, etc. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and have to run back out to the truck.
Lepton1 and GiantBeard Thank this. -
I think he was mostly amused at my detailed log book, ending with "stopped at scale house".
For the most part, he told me to, " keep doing what you're doing."
This is the part where I tell my boss that "my program" of doing things saved him time, money, and a headache.Bob Dobalina, Lepton1, White_Knuckle_Newbie and 2 others Thank this. -
You need to remind boss that most co. give out 250$ more or less for a good insp.?
Lepton1, blairandgretchen and GiantBeard Thank this. -
Your (paperwork) is all permits needed to operate ( your permit book and trailer registration.). All shipping documents plus your drivers license and till the new systems are fully in place your medical card. If your using a paper log book this as well.
GiantBeard Thanks this. -
"paperwork" usually means registration/proof of insurance. An O/O may need to show his lease also. Log book too, but don't volunteer it until he asks for it. Now the BOL is a different animal. Usually not asked for unless Ca./Az. bug checks. Rule of thumb, if it's in your trailer, you need to show possession (legal) but what about a case of water the consignee refused ? And you're taking it home ? Some grey areas here, right ? Just show what the officer asks for. A veh insp you should keep copy in truck for 30 days, because you show it a week later and MAY get out of another insp.

Some places they just get your license and logbook and tell you to park. Then come out to your truck and collect the other stuff. Then if its a level 1 they will do the inspection and go print the report. I had a state trooper in Georgia to tell me once over the CB what he wanted and when he got up to me I had it all ready.
White_Knuckle_Newbie Thanks this.
