I have been reading all the reports on PAM and USA trucking, and my hopes have been shot to hell. I live in Connecticut, unemployed since April 06 and hoping to go to Driver solutions for training and get picked up by one of their contacted companies. I then find out that they are a CDL mill and their contract companies are hosed. Any ideas for a war veteran with no money and a break in employment for which I was in college.
What Now???

The Dept. of labor has a veterans affairs office in it most of the time. They will help to get things going in the right direction. Good luck.

I'm about done with trying to get help from the VA. In the course of one of my conversations with a VA rep, I told him that I had served in 4 different conflicts in my career and it was now time for them to help me out. I was told by the rep that I volunteered for it and the VA doesn't work on the payback method. I am not looking for handouts, I'm just looking for a way to get my life back on track and make an honest living without upfront costs.

i was in your shoes and ended up going through a CDL mill for my training, but i am not obligated to stay with one company. if i could have gone a different route i would have because the school i trained at was over crowded with poor equipment. i financed my training and i am stuck with a payment but at least if i dont like one company i can go elsewhere. i am currently with Werner and so far it has been good and i have maybe three weeks training to go. i'll stick with Werner for now as I haven't had any bad experiences. there seems to be many negative posters on this forum but i wouldn't just accept what only a few have to say, i would research and find what best meets your needs. you might try posting your question on the area for new drivers or the experienced drivers area. from one military vet to another i wish you the best of luck.

Zers- how about going with Big Orange (Schneider)? They have co sponsored training, and yes that does mean you will be stuck with them for at least a year, but it could be a move in the right direction.
Lady_Truck Thanks this. -
I have been seriously considering them, but I talked to a recruiter and she told me that there were no jobs in the NE and I would have to move to the midwest. Now, your talking to a guy who's wife left him and took the money with her. I'm a step away from living out of a refrigerator box and they want me to pull up stakes and move somewhere and get an address in the midwest. Any ideas???

zers, I don't know if you are in their lane of hire, but try Roehl Transport. Their main terminal is out of Marshfield, Ws but they have terminals in a few other places as well. They train students and they have a good reputation. My husband is a driver for them and is about to become a trainer with them. Their phone number for your area is: 1-877-207-1251. Good Luck.

Zers- that sucks, sorry to hear that. Good luck, hopefully something will open up for you.
If you want to stay in the area (and don't mind seriously busting your ###) you could try a company like fedex ground or Fedex home delivery. You would need to be able to put a downpayment for a delivery truck (usually around $1K-$2K), but you could start out as a temp and see if you like it. I ran for them (with a step van) for almost three years, and the very least I ever brought home was around $600 a week, that was after fuel, truck payment, taxes etc. -
Hey Whispers, tell your hubby,GOOD LUCK withhis new venture,(trainer).I would not have the patience to be a trainer, and I admire anyone who does.
