That first year. I would say maybe 70% finish with the carrier that financed their school.
I would say 15 to 25 % will finish but change jobs and find a carrier that will pay.
Somewhere around 8% will not finish that first year and get out of the job.
Of the ones that do finish that first year based on what I am hearing about 35 to 40% are still around by the 5-year mark. That 2nd year the carriers lose a lot of drivers to either better jobs or the drivers get out because they can't handle Jody or the stress of making deadlines and/or being away from home.
Once a driver gets past that 5-year mark most of the time they will still be driving in 10 years.
This is a VERY hard question to answer because to the best of my knowledge no database has been compiled. I'm going by my conversations with friends that work for the carriers.
What percentage of people make it

Oh man, back at my job again. Sometimes I feel like a dead man walking and other times I forget about it. I see guys coming in happy to be here, care free, #### chatting and sipping coffee and I’m jealous of them.
I took a second job yesterday. Delivering pizzas. Going to do it after work on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Maybe do some weekend shifts here and there where you can make pretty good money. If I get the ax they said some guys end up doing that as their main job but it’s mostly guys doing second job and college guys. The guy told me you can make $22/hour “if you hustle”. That’s not bad. The main problem I’m thinking about is health insurance....
Part of me just wants it over. If I’m done here just get it over with. Waking up 4-5 am and worrying and not being able to get back to sleep is no way to live.
Truck driving might end up saving me eventually so I’m still on this site now and then trying to learn things. -
It is just a job, you really need to chill.
Jay_Pull Thanks this. -
All I can say is if you are this worried over how many don't make it then do yourself a favor and don't even try .
Just because someone else failed has no bearing on if you will fail .
If you let others failure have an effect on your decision on things in life ...... I just can't even imagine .......
Of course I can't even wrap my brain around doing a job I hate as bad you seem to hate yours .
I have been driving for 38 years and I have never been an hour without a job that I didn't want to be .
I see people every day that hate trucking as bad as you hate your job and I tell every one of them the same thing I would say to you .
Life is to danged short to spend even one minute being miserable in a job of any kind .
In my book you are better off missing a few holidays and birthdays than you are being a grouchy miserable human being at home every day .
My family has a good life because I was willing to miss a few school activities and birthdays .
When I am home we have a good time together .
My wife doesn't need me to make every little choice for her and my kids have been taught to think for themselves.
I think trucking has my family better with me being gone .
We are a team and we get things done as a team .
By the way I still have my original wife .
My kids have not been in prison .
Both have masters degrees in something LOL.
So all I can say is trucking has very very good to me and mine .
I am loved by a family that will tell you the same thing about trucking .
OK that is enough rambling on for this old dog .
What ever you decide I wish you the best of luck .x1Heavy, Truckermania, dwells40 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Out of 8 in my class only 6 of us got their cdls.
I think I and possibly one other guy are still driving.
