We always get our dogs from shelters. I am all for it. We had a lab Mastiff mix and we have a Pug now that came from a shelter. She is just to old to take on the road and my wife would not let me any how!! Lol. The only reason I was thinking of getting a dog as a puppy and getting a particular breed...my thinking is I want a dog that won't get to big and one that is still athletic enough to get in and out and still be protective.

I had a Jack that was a rescue. They are way to hyper and need a ton of exercise. Was a cool dog though. Ended up giving him to a family with kids on a farm.

I have six pooches at the house. All different sizes, colors and quirky personalities. All rescues. The one that enjoys car rides the most is a corgie mix. She loves sitting co-pilot and looking out of the window. Too bad chemical plants don't allow dogs. I would love having one or two of my guys ride along... Hope you find your teammate soon!

Jack Russell is a great little dog, but only if you have the time to do a lot with it. They are hyperactive, as has been mentioned. Give them plenty of play, love and exercise and they are a true joy for a companion. But ignore them and let them get bored at your peril.
They become destructive and escape artists.
Yeah, but both you and your wife have more common sense than any "Fifi" owner.

Get one of those that's about the size of a can of dog food.
    Like Toto. Only smaller.

Some dude had one at the 7 Feathers and it ran around, loved everybody, and we F howled with laughter.

    Seriously, get a cat.

They'd make good guard dogs; the big one goes for the throat and the short one goes for the crotch. The thief wouldn't stand a chance!
