As far as Navistar goes, the DT466 was a heck of a engine. Smaller engine best suited for a 2-ton truck, but you can make some pretty impressive hp with them with a little tinkering, and those things ran forever without problems. It was the old IH design before Navistar bought them out.

Other than the DT466, I've never been impressed with any of their other engines, from the small V8s put in Ford trucks, to the maxxforce junk.

I've Only ever owned Cats. I drove a guys 12.7 powered 389 home when he was sick. I thought the clutch was shot on it at first because it made a bunch of noise, but didn't hardly move compared to my 3406E.

Blanket advice on how any family of motors likes to be driven is not the best thing. To be fair a 365hp 3406E has a different power and torque curve from a 475 or 550. Pull a 3406B or C down to 1300 day in day out if its heavy isn't going to win you anything but hard luck.

Your young and want to learn I get that. A little more listening and a little less jawing may get you there.

The right foot may very well be the biggest factor in mpg. However having any engine set right as well as performing right is just as important. A minor boost leak can be a big deal. A couple valves just a little tight can be a big deal. Most want to jump to "tune" a laggy engine. When in reality finding its ailment first would probably suit them

Well i guess the Guy who drove cats his whole life,my father, and many others were wrong even though they never had any issues and got great mpg :biggrin_25514:
Ill do this there a cat mechanic on youtube ill ask him what he thinks of that style and see what he says
Mechanical engines dont have to be ran at high rpms at least the cats dont but thats just what ive seen and heard
Also theres no such thing as a 425 3406b at least if im around cause the littlr screws are gonna get moved a little ways BUT i just need to know what the trans can support and what the engine was stock now i dont know much about the stuff before the 3406 though so if anybody has info on that it would be very interesting stuff like the 1693ta i think was one of em somthing like that anyway different people drive different ways

Hey kid, you need to learn when to listen to someone, @wore out is someone to listen to when your talking about Cats. He is the first I would go to with a Cat question.

Ill say this i dont have a cdl but i have 7 years of experience 5 of which were spent in a 05 379 with a 550 cat and a 18 and we NEVER had a break down from engine issues except a hose but hell we limped that ol girl quite a good little ways before we had to change out that hose.

You move them screws and pull it down low you wont move enough air to keep it from melting pistons. Air flow through an engine keeps cylinder temps down.
