I see this thread turning into yet another pissing contest over hood vs. aero.
There is no one size fits all answer to determine what is cheap freight. We can come up with all the different scenarios and formulas we want, but even those cannot answer the question.
In my operation anything less than $3.50pm in my mind is cheap, but another guy might wet himself to get a rate like that, and another might think that anything less than $4pm is cheap. But even if all three of these operations costs were within a half a cent of each other, I still don't think that would change anyone's opinion on what cheap is or is not. -
Agreed. My insurance may be low compared to Joe's insurance. Joe might not have a truck payment, but I have 3. He can haul what I can't. Everyone has their bottom line and that's what sets us apart.
However, I was asking what's the answer to the question some 5-6 posts prior about truck 1 or 2 being more profitable.. Just based off the info provided.. Basically wanted to see if my math was right at 4am -
Had a few days last few weeks when I grossed almost 3000 and netted over 1000 in one day. Not sure if that's pure luck or what. But my expectations plank is raised.
And by net I mean net, not after fuel. -
BigBadBill and SL3406 Thank this.

"cheap" = below what the usual market rate is for a lane ... I can play both games ... pay me a fair rate and steady, or try to lowball me and I won't haul it, but when you do need me, now it's time to play the game my way ... that is, if I am not already hauling something for one of my steady regular customers ... Anyone that plays the price cutting game to get a load is only hurting themself ...

I think it's reasonable to include in your cost per mile return on investment, healthcare premiums, all personal vehicle expenses, after all that's what I use to get to my truck on Mon.
Can you put a price on body damage from sedentary lifestyle? I'm talking not only about blood vessels, also eyeballs, knees
, lungs, skin , stds, sleep deprivation, just stress in general.
Just asked a coworker the other day, he said his cost is 70 cpm.
I don't have enough trucks or time spent in this business to teach what's right or wrong.
But my strong opinion is if someone spent say 85 cpm to keep running for even a couple of years, I'd still stick to at least a dollar a mile cost because repairs always can come in overwhelmingly fast, in a row. -
Love it!! Folks in fantasyland.....
The thing of it is Oscar..NOBODY is paying $3.50 per mile in all directions on Legal,Standard feight......Now If YOU are hauling a specialized trailer or you do OD freight...Yeah, You can average $3.50 Per mile.......
Average per mile frieght on (Lets say) a Flatbed should get around $2.25 per mile..ALL MILES in every direction..(Yes,That means freight out of Texas going North And Freight Out of New england (If yopu can get it) Going west).........
I See these irregular Route Horse-hogger carriers coming inbound Chicago Daily..With absolutely No Busainess at all coming here.........Their Drivers dont even want to come here..But They do.. Why??
Because our market generally pays well.........NOW, Lets Get all of out ######## stories Out..And lets start telling the truth here.
Yes..Freight is in the carriers favor NOW...But it will change as it always does..........So Drivers, Do all your Gouging Now while you can...grizzly Thanks this.
