I just retired as a firefighter and now I am taking a 5 week Commercial Driving class at a local community college here in Virginia. My wants are to be an OTR driver and be out for 12 days and home for 4. I am 55 years old and live in the Harrisonburg, Va. area. My questions are: What are the chances of getting what I want. What companies should I look at and will they give me anything for my experience for driving a fire engine and ladder truck all those years? Be nice to recoup the $1600 for school also. What say you?
What say you, will a company accomodate these requests?

I think you might be in for some disappointment there... Most places really don't credit Apparatus time as it's not interstate. If you find a place with that kind of schedule, I'd like to hear about it... All I've seen will generally give one day hometime for each seven on the road. But, many do offer tuition reimbursement, but at about $100 a month.
Welcome aboard from a fellow smoke eater.Fireman0053 Thanks this. -
Roehl Transport out of Wisconsin has quite a few hometime fleets though I dont know if they would be avaliable in your area. I was with them 3 years and had few complaints.

Well, find out if the school you want to go to has any sort of deals with trucking companies. I went to one where I chose the company I wanted to go with after training and if you stayed with the company for a year then they reimbursed you. As far as the 12 on 4 off, I dont know of any company that does that, most you earn 1 day off per week out, some give 5 per 30 days, 2 days off after first 2 weeks then 3 days off after second 2 weeks. Good luck to you.

If you come to watkins and shepard with a three person team they have a program where the truck is shared with the three of you..you drive as a team...2 weeks on and one week off...its a rotating schedule...good luck finding the three people though.. Call J.P. at U.S. Truck driving school in sterling heights michigan..he had a chicky asking about that program 3 weeks ago, she may still be in school and could be your first partner in the truck.

I'd just take my retirement, take up golf or some other activity and live a happy life.
As for the fire truck driving, sorry, none of that counts as any road time.
As for the time on the road? Just tell them what you want, and if YOU WANT to be on the road for X number of days or weeks? They should oblige you.
Good luck, wish it were me RETIRED!~!Last edited: Feb 10, 2012

Which really makes you wonder how/why truck drivers allowed themselves to be suckered into such an industry "norm". Anywhere else...just about any other industry, you work 5 days and you have 2 days off...the "weekend". We've got to work 7 just to "earn" 1 day off....and that 1 day off may not even be a full day.
Makes me glad I got a local gig. I usually work 5 days per week, and try to log as much time as I can so I'm out of hours and CAN'T work on the weekend.Fireman0053 Thanks this. -
The best thing i know of for hometime is crst they have a 10/20 program with three drivers run 20 days get 10 at home, but the numbers say you lose dollars. Compsred to two drivers,
