You're close to Savannah,GA so there's plenty of tanker jobs available. You can run coast to coast with Trimac Transportation; they have a terminal as far west as Los Angeles.
As mentioned, Schneider Bulk is good to get the career started and the paychecks are good.

If you want to stay out of the Northeast, look at Danny Herman Trucking. Dry van and runs mostly in the warmer climates with lots of runs along the Texas border towns. One terminal is in Calexico,California which you'll see often.

Abilene Motor Express is dry van and from what I've read, they're picking up more and more freight off the west coast. They also pull some refrigerated freight.

Freymiller has a good reputation for being driver friendly and having long runs. They hire new cdl grads through the "Restore Program" which is described on the website.

I see you're from north Chuck-town... I grew up in West Ashley many moons ago. I caught my break in trucking before there was such a thing as a CDL & I did it by dropping by different trucking company yards on Friday afternoons and grilled any driver willing to talk to me.
That tactic got my foot in the door with Bulldog Hiway Express there in North Charleston. Good company, good benefits, good options... at least back then anyway.... look them up and give them a call.

Thanks for all the information and advice. I talk to Schneider today and I am 90% sure I'm going to hire on with them in their tanker division. I'll commit to a year driving a tanker and if I don't like it after that, I'll give flatbed a shot.

This website is great. There's no excuse for not making an informed decision with such a good group of professional drivers sharing their knowledge, wisdom, and experiences. Special shout-out to @Chinatown and @19d (he didn't comment on this thread, but I read his thread about Schneider and it helped me make my decision).

Congratulations! I signed on with Schneider today, too. I had intended to go tanker, but took this offer instead: (sorry for those who read this in other thread)
    So here's the skinny:
Just finished a telephone interview with SNI Recruiter Rachael Krzewina. We spoke for a little under an hour & I highly recommend anybody considering Schneider to speak with her directly.
I shared with her my experience(s) & desires and we spoke about several different positions that interested me. Originally having desired to do tankers, she made me aware of a dedicated WalMart account. We spoke about that account at length and what answers she didn't know, she found someone who did. At the end of the conversation & in her subsequent email to me, here's what they offered and I accepted, in writing so far:

-Walmart Dedicated out of Bedford, Pa
Reimbursement for driving personal vehicle to Carlisle from Vermont for orientation and back to Bedford to get a tractor.
-$10,000.00 sign on bonus paid on installments over first year.
    -.49 cents per mile
    -1800-2K miles per week
    - 5 days off plus 2 days travel time (7 total) for 3wks running.
    - Reimbursement for driving personal vehicle to and from Bedford on off time - no flying if I don't want to.
-No slip seating, BUT truck may be used while I'm off - they provide safe storage for personal belongings while off.
    - I go to local physician next Tuesday for MedCard & drug screen, then off to Carlisle on the 19th.

I ran a Costco dedicated account for 5 years and loved it; have a lot of time with Walmart freight, too, etc. I'm looking forward to it.

Had a great phone call interview yesterday. Had a talk with my wife and sent the email last night telling the recruiter I wanted to pursue the tanker opening.

    - $5k sign on bonus paid out over a year
    - 4$k tuition reimbursement paid out over 20 months at $200/mo
    - Flight to PA for training
    - .39 cpm loaded and deadhead
    - average 2000 miles a week
    - 10-14 days out, three days home
    - Can park the truck at a tankwash that is ten minutes from home.

Soonest I can leave for orientation is next weekend, so I've got about ten days to get ready.

    Looking forward to it.
