While TN does have a permanent plate, our sales taxes are some of the highest in the nation, partly because we don't have a state income tax.
On a side note, I'm looking at a Landoll traveling axle trailer. The TN Landoll dealer kind of rubbed me the wrong way today though. I've dealt with this dealer for years and the owner was a great guy but he has recently sold out. Met the new owner today and he didn't seem very personable and quickly pawned me off on one of his salesman. I'm sorry but if I'm getting ready to drop $80K on a trailer, I think the owner should be a little more helpful instead of dumping me on one of his salesman that doesn't know anything about the trailer in question other than the price.Oxbow, Ruthless and 4mer trucker Thank this. -
I used an agent in Maine to title and register my big trailer - all in less than $1000 for 3 plates and titles and expedited processing. Saved me over $25k in sales tax.
Many people used to use OK but I believe a physical business presence must be established now - not so with Maine.Ruthless Thanks this. -
Idaho has a "North America Permanent", I think it's $99 + $3 for the plate & doesn't have to be titled in ID.
I don't know how it works, just saw it on their MCS site when I was getting permits. -
Wisconsin is $50 non expiring. No sales tax on interstate licensed vehicles.

Trailers in CA are $20 for 5 years, but don't know about residency requirements.

I wouldn't register a dog in CA...
Lots of people register in Montana for RV's and other things like this because of the lack of sales tax. You do need a presence here so what they do is set up a LLC and register all the stuff under that. this might actually be a good thing. If the llc is different from the trucking company and the trucking company gets sued, they cannot get the assets that belong to the other LLC.
