I actually applied for a garbage truck driver job in winnipeg a few months ago.It sounded like a good job, good hourly pay, good shift times and home everyday. They said i didnt have the experience they needed. I allready had 9 months OTR driving truck , I asked what they needed and they said stright truck experience. I would have thought tractor trailer would be harder to drive than straight truck but thats what they wanted.I found it hard to understand their reasoning .
What the? Turned down for garbage truck driver job

I think they meant they want dump experience. You come out of a big truck and crawl in a rolloff is a big difference. A loaded compactor box is extremely top heavy. Plus there is a little to running in a muddy landfill and dumping like they want. I've seen many long dumps flipped over when the garbage hangs up and they ain't sitting level. They want someone with lever experience like a dozer or backhoe to run the frontloader. There's alot of levers/hydraulics in one and they are easy to tear up if you don't know what you are doing.
There's a few things to learn
There are companies that will hire you. Don't let one deter you. You might want to get some dump truck experience, then move into a rolloff.Everett, jerryy123, airforcetoo and 4 others Thank this. -
lol, sounds like a stupid company. How are you supposed to get into the garbage biz if companies like this arent willing to train. The world is full of idiots.
The Challenger, jerryy123 and airforcetoo Thank this. -

There's alot of jobs like that. You need experience but where do you get it??
It's like OTR, some require experience and some don't. Alot of them local jobs like working for the city or county is who you know. So start making city friends.
I never drove rolloff before, but I knew everyone that worked there. That's how I got my break. If you drove a big truck, it's not rocket science to adapt. Everybody they hired since me is someone I recommended. So you see how it works. I kind of wished I've stayed. I would of been the boss now driving a new pick up doing nothing but playing all day. I quit when Chattanooga started hauling their human waste into the landfill. You had to wollar in 2 feet of crap sometimes to open your gate. Before I knew it everything I owned was smelling like crap. Time to quit.
Looking back, it was one of the more fun jobs I had. People throw all kinds of good stuff away. I made all kinds of side money.jerryy123 Thanks this. -
I had applied for a straight truck position, just a flatbed delivery truck with an attached forklift and was turned down. Reason was...."The first time you get upset or things dont go your way, you'll leave and go back on the road." was his exact answer.

it may be that you've only been driving for 9 months and are ready to change jobs already. They may see that as instability in your work history also. good luck
companyman Thanks this. -
Staying at one job for a while is definately good if you can do it but I am working to live and if I can get a better paying job and make more to support my family then thats what I will do. Employers seem to understand that up here. They know theres alot of other good paying jobs and that guys will be trying to get them. Its an employees job market at the moment so it happens alot.Albertaflatbed Thanks this.
