With all do respect...
A straight truck is NOT "just like driving a darn bobtail." It is so much easier to flip a straight then a trailer....Try driving a tri-axle dump with 80k on it............or a roll off for that matter....not much room for error.
Let's show some respect............OK?

You state you have 9 months experience driving an 18 wheeler. Why do you apply at companies that require 1 year or more experience? Apply at the companies that require 0-6 months experience. Experience level is based on insurance requirements and goes back only 3 years. All that miscellaneous driving in the past means nothing. Your logistics education means nothing with regards to driving an 18 wheeler.
Why aren't you using that degree to your benefit? There are several warehouses/distribution centers that would take you in as an entry level dock supervisor position. -
Its funny to read all these replys.
I am in the same boat here. Towing has slowed to a snails pace and in order to keep the bills paid and food on the table, I want to go back on the road.
Now keep in mind I have tractor trailer OTR experience 1994 to 19996 and in 2000...
But my experience mainly for the last 15 years has been heavy duty towing. Yeah I am the guy that comes out and tows your tractor trailer behind my 40 foot tow truck to the shops. Yes I can even back up the whole combination.
What I am getting is that I have no experience driving truck, yet I am good enough and qualified to tow their 70+ foot combinations 100's of miles.
Go figureGearjammin' Penguin, BostonTanker, bbechtel16 and 3 others Thank this. -
Driver Helper and they called me in for a Seasonal Feeder Driver position.
Do you want to be stuck in an office or warehouse (No windows) with someone looking over your shoulder for the next 20 years?? I don't, I did that for a sizable part of the last 30. Even in upper levels of management I had someone crawling up my ### all day. I said I was not going back to that when I retired the first time around.
The degree was more about finishing something I started than ever getting a job with it.jerryy123 Thanks this. -
One of my first jobs was trash hauler. I lied about my experience to get hired. That was back in the 80s so I can say it to the world now! I learned a lot about trucks on that job. No front brakes, overloaded and under the influence!
Any old Mascaro drivers on here?
Someone posted about different skills to drive garbage, dump, flatbed, etc. I did all that and I say either you are a good driver or you aren't. It's all about handling a machine according to conditions. It's one skill in my mind. -
When applying for a job the candidates resume and application should be job specific and that means if applying for a truck driving position OTR do not say that you have a college degree or other educational achievements that do not matter and so on and so forth.
Check out this resume, basic and to the point listing job specific skills that make the applicant seem very qualified for the OTR CDL A driver position.

It is essential to customize the resume and a candidates interview behavior so that the wording is custom tailored to fit each position applied for because you don't want to give a hiring manager any doubts as to why they should hire you.jerryy123 Thanks this. -
