Even at 1500 miles a week, in the 7 months you've been with Con-way you've no doubt gained some valuable experience, paid your 'dues', and developed some skill as a driver.
When the company you drive for does not step up to the plate, you owe it to yourself to move on. Especially with your bills piling up and going unpaid. Far too often the trade-off in the beginning is long hours and poor pay for experience. Shouldn't be that way, but it's a fact.
Yuppo, if you're not running and getting miles you should be job hunting. The market for drivers is pretty good right now, best it's been since the Great Recession. Try to find a job FIRST before quitting, of course; that's the BEST way to move on. Not always possible.
But, hey, I think you'll find that you're in demand. Try not to move laterally. By laterally, I mean mega truckload carrier to mega truckload carrier. The promises are all the same. You could apply for Con-way LTL, for example. Or Old Dominion. A tanker outfit. Lots of choices out there.
Good luck! Con-way TL's loss. Tsk! Tsk!
What to do? Not getting miles at Con-Way :-(

Trucking sucks.
Get a real job
Ask for "retention department". Ala James or the fleet mgrs mgr.
Try not to get any how to respect your coworker cd's.
Its sad but the only thing that works is getting threatened by a higher corporate via email or three way call etc...
It gets really really old.zackery2011 and double yellow Thank this. -
I have tried the fleet managers manager. Didn't work. Even tried Tim hicks. He helped wit another problem I had in the past, but said no one can do anything about getting another truck. I also never even heard of the retention department, even after all the people I talked to no one once mentioned that. Sure enough i see it does exist by looking on google. I will try calling them Monday and see what happens with that. Have you talked to them before?Chinatown Thanks this. -

Start submitting online applications and ignore "experience required" and you will have job offers within 24-48 hours. Don't waste any more time with Conway. You'll probably get phone calls before you finish submitting job applications.

zackery2011 Thanks this. -
Had the same experience in 2011 with CWTL. Started as a rookie in April and was gone by July. Low miles, low pay, lots of sitting around waiting. Sad to see that 3 yrs later it hasnt changed much from what I read on here.

Git along little doggie, greener pastures elsewhere.
Fact is, they (Con-way) don't care about you. They'd like to get your truck figured out so they don't lose another driver after you because of it. Takes time and they want a driver assigned to the truck as sort of a guinea pig, truck-tester in this case. If it runs and you run, fine. If it doesn't and you leave, that's fine, too. They are too big to care.
A light bulb should go off inside every new driver's head when told to go over to Cummins, Freightliner, etc. to pick up your 'new' truck. Aha!
Mega carrier indifference. Desperate to hire you, hardly willing to lift a finger to keep you. 100% turnover. Avoid 'lists' of similar megas. Don't move laterally.
Once you start getting some offers, start asking about turnover. Every trucking outfit has turnover. The ones with the least turnover don't offer sign-on bonuses, don't advertise, pay better and treat you better.
Yeah, they're mostly smaller companies, although you can be abused by smaller companies, too. Hey! You need to start shopping for a better job!Last edited: Oct 25, 2014

Thank you Victor_V for saying it like it is

Retention department moved from a specific group of ppl to help keep you here.
To Mary the welcome to Conway lady( super nice old lady)
To safety
Now its just a senior flt manager.
But when you tell the operator you want the retention department they know what's up and you can get a decent run at least.
Even though these crappy trucks are going to break down along the way.
I had in here on the old thread where I left Laredo and had to get towed 3 times along the way to Billings Montana
Tow truck drivers prob did 20% of my paid driving xD ....hey I made it yo buffalo Wyoming....
Tow man dropped my truck and it went rolling across the entire mhc kw parking lot....thank goodness for split tow law.
Keep searching for that new job this place ain't worth staying around. Wish I would have bolted winter before last. -
That trimac Chinatown is talking about
The elite fleet sounds like a good deal.
Local driver in Louisville offered me $13.75 an hr...I was like wtf!!!????!!! Really.... River city distribution pays more than that xD. Hung up very quickly.
But that elite fleet is a good deal. Thought it was Houston but it could be dfw. Def worth checking into.
