Found a local job and calling in to quit today. I know the company is gonna be pissed because I didn't run last night but my issue lies with the truck. I know they are going to want me to bring it to a terminal but I have no way of getting home if I do that. Home terminal is 5 hours away. I doubt they are going to buy me a bus ticket home since I quit. The truck is parked safely behind my house. Was going to tell me dm just to have someone come get the truck. Is this still considered abandonment?
What to do?

Yes this abandonment and absolutely do not do that! They will put a truck abandonment on your DAC and this can be as bad as DUI on your record. Make every attempt possible in getting that truck back to them!
Personally I would also give notice. This is just the right way to do things professionally and will also go on your record.
Not only will you have a truck abandonment on your record but the company will charge you a hefty recovery fee most likely in the thousands of dollars range!
Do the right thing!
Good luck man.... -
Thanks for the advice. Although, I'm wondering, how can they get me to pay thousands in recovery fee? They can take my last check but that won't cover it.

Did they bring the truck to your house when you got hired?
If not then why should they have to come get it just because you don't want to be inconvenienced by having to return it ?
Just man up and do what is right ! It never fails to amaze me when people want everything done for them so they won't be put out to do what's right !!
They can file a civil suit against you or they will just charge it to you and then turn it over to a collection agency.
Take their truck back to them and either rent a car or ride a bus or hitch hike home but return their truck to them .
I gaurentee you that you signed a peice of paper that said you would pay all costs to recover the truck if you didn't return it to the terminal and I bet it won't be the same thing they paid you to drive it !!!!
i know this not what you want to hear and that you are going to do what you want but don't be just another sleazy steering wheel holding whiner and do what a professional driver would do and take the danged truck back !!! -
chances are they prolly wont sue.
But if you don't return it, you are going to have a hard time finding a diff co to hire you. -
Is this one of the big companies? If it is then just do the right thing and give a notice. Most of them will get you a bus ticket home if you quit the right way.
If you do what you are thinking of doing you will get abandonment and a collection agency hounding you. -
Abandonment is bad bad juju.
That give notice crap above is meaningless. I haven't given notice to anyone in six years. Never has it "gone on my record" or made it hard to get a job, and I once worked for the sleeziest of companies, CR England and Covenant. -
By give notice I mean tell them you are quitting and ask them where they'd like you to take the truck. -
Do you have anybody that can make a day trip out of it and just follow you and bring you back home? Either way a 5 hr bus trip isn't going to cost a lot of money if the company doesn't pay. Turn the truck in...you do not want the abadonment on your DAC
-
Just get a rental car one way or a bus, it will be cheaper then when they come after you for having to recover the truck. You don't what to go through the headache.
aiwiron Thanks this.
