Oh good, use the time to take care of your son.
This goes to show mentors are not always the apple of daddy's eye. They can sometimes be quite rotten.
What to expect during my mentorship

Keep your eyes forward. Aim high in steering (Smith system). Look as far down the road as safely possible (crest of hill, line of traffic, etc) and that will help automatically center you in your lane. The closer you are looking in front of the truck the more you will away within the lane.G13Tomcat and LoSt_AgAiN Thank this.

The paycheck issue is why I try to push dock to driver programs on everyone. $17/hr to load trucks while you are waiting and then while you are learning. More than most megas pay once you get your own truck even. Hang in there if ya can op, just push thru the bs and there are bigger and better things coming your way.

So. They gave me two options:
1) front me the 218 bucks to grayhound me from Laredo to Detroit. It’ll take 2 days,
2) stay with my mentor in Laredo, they’ll get us a load back to Detroit, I’ll stay on payroll, and get my hours logged.
Obviously I took the second. Terrible situation!88 Alpha and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
Situation sucks but I think you made the right call. This is horrible I know but light at the end of the tunnel...just focus on it.

On top of all this I was just driving in Laredo in rush hour...not at all pleasant...I survived, but very stressedVic Firth and FlaSwampRat Thank this.

all cities suck lol, you will get used to it. Just take your time and keep that good following distance you like and you will be okay.tinytim, LoSt_AgAiN and Vic Firth Thank this.

Texas traffic can wear you down but once you get east of Dallas it’ll be ok. I was in 6am Austin traffic Wednesday headed northbound and it was backed up for miles. Keep reminding yourself of your goals it will get you through this.G13Tomcat and FlaSwampRat Thank this.

Thank God I haven't been in South Texas in awhile.

Ok everyone, I just want to share my thoughts, if they are out of line I do genuinely hope you tell me. Please note I’m not complaining, it’s just the things that make me uneasy, and I want to know if I’m right or not:
1) HOS- I’m to go “off duty” when I’m fueling, loading/unloading etc. this ends up eating my 30 minute break. I thought those tasks were supposed to be “On Duty”
2) if I am coming into a situation traffic wise, and I’m trying to read it, I take my foot off the gas for a moment until I’m sure I’m safe, I’m reading it correctly, etc. he tells me to get my foot on the gas.
3) I’m getting better at downshifting, but he gets on my butt if I go down a gear too far. I’d rather be safe than dead.
4) we’ve already discussed the following distance. How can you get on someone’s ### for having too much following distance?
5) everything I do wrong he tells me don’t do X, Y, Z. He never tells me what I SHOULD do. When I ask, he MAY tell me, but usually it feels like a bunch of ########.
6) he will be giving me backup instructions from outside, like he just helped me connect to a trailer, but he got me in there at an angle, now he’s complaining about it!
Now, personally, he’s very nice. He’s being very helpful in getting me back home, he’s a good PERSON...but probably shouldn’t be a MENTOR lolLast edited: Sep 13, 2019
