Look for a company that lets you stay with a trainer for the longest period of time.

One thing that made a big difference for me is how they treat you beginning from the interview process and while in training. More specifically, most trucking companies I spoke with wanted me to take a bus to training and then "double up" in an "economy" hotel for the training period. When I started with Trimac, the manager stated that I would have a room to myself at a Holiday Inn Express and they would pay for all meal expenses. Training pay was also much better than any other company I have spoken with. My thoughts are if a company takes care of their people they will get the same in return and it seems many of the mega carriers have not figured this out. He also stated that while in training with driver/trainer, I would be allowed to get a hotel while traveling to avoid two of us having to stay in the truck together. Trimac does not hire many drivers without experience however but it does happen. I agree with the previous comment about looking for a company that allows you to stay with the trainer for a longer time period rather than just trying to get you out on your own. There is plenty of time for that and the most important thing would be learning as much as possible while you have an experienced guy there to assist.
