    Thank you for your response!
I got to drive a few types of trannies extensively as a Validation test driver for class 8's

I considered automated manuals (air shift) AMT's and I don't prefer the way they operate for very slow- precision- manuvering, especially in tight areas or on slopes and city traffic. It kind of seems to be an "all or nothing" clutch engagement often having to give lots of accelerator for backing up ramps resulting in slamming into the dock.

I really liked the Allison as it is a "true" AT that uses a torque converter. I prefer this for the type of driving I expect to be doing and Is much smoother. The TC allows much higher/ variable gear ratio as well.

I have not. The price range of the trucks I'm considering would not have the newer updated trannies or software/ computers to go with it (emisions)

Allison is the "best" In my years and price range.

Actually, what I'm referring to are shifted by electric solenoid, not air. They use a torque converter/clutch to get rolling, and shift by electronics. Basically they've taken the shifter off the top of the standard trans and replaced it with an electronic box. The computer controls the throttle and shifting, all you do is drive. You can also select manual, and push the button to shift yourself. Volvo's I-shift is pretty amazing, but I'm not impressed by the Peterbilt I'm currently driving. Possibly just a programming issue.
I will agree that sometime a clutch is best, push the clutch and just roll up to where you need to be, very difficult with an auto.
I have bad knees too, and the first time I drove into stop and go traffic with the Volvo, I fell in love with it!
