Alot of the problem when Truckers organize a "strike" is very few actually know "why" they're P/O'd when it come to actually telling someone. They're just mad. In this case it'll come down to fuel prices.
You need to be more specific.
There's alot going on in Washington that is effecting the Trucking industry and ultimately, the economy. The economy is the number one issue in the Presidential election and all three candidates seem to have "a plan" to stimulate our economic growth. On the other hand, they also have enviromental issues that they swear to deal with.
Problem. What Washington is NOT understanding is that these two issues directly conflict with one another, especially when it come to the Trucking Industry. Their solution is to tax the country into submission when it comes to emission control. Their CARBON TAX proposals will add another .50 to 1.00 per gallon of fuel with a steady increase per year until our emissions fall to an acceptable level. Their philosophy asserts that this will economically force people to simply "drive less" therefore reducing emissions. Problem solved?
No. This "strike" should not be simply about fuel prices. Washington is on a course of action that will in effect cripple this country economically. The Trucking Industry cannot survive such thoughtless legislation without having properly addressed alternatives. Is their alternative aimed at wiping the Trucking Industry out?
Fuel prices. The Trucking Industry has got to have a fuel surcharge program (that accurately reflects the current fuel prices) that goes 100% to the carrier ON EVERY LOAD OF FREIGHT and is tax emempt. That surcharge is NOT subject to the hands of Brokers or agents.
To meet the current enviromental laws and regulations, the trucking industry has got to have an affordable alternative source of power. Until there is an acceptable source of power which meets the clean air standards of ALL US states, truckers should be exempt from ideleing laws when they are on their mandatory 10 hr. break. When this source of power is decided upon, Carriers should be given a 100% tax credit and a reasonable amount of time to comply with clean air standards.
Thoughtless Legislation has to STOP!!!
Any US carrier caught employing illegal workers (in any capacity) should be lose their license to haul/broker freight. Period.
Freight Rates. They have to be able to fluctuate with the economy.
