Greetings,
I am looking ahead. I am planning on making a come back out of Medical retirement and going back Trucking. With my Medical problems I will not be able to drive till a normal retirement age, but I'm planning on that.
What am I planning? I am planning on starting my own company. I've kinda writing a business plan in my research in it all out now.
Goal; A Company all will want to drive for, and None wants to leave. Dream maybe but that's my Goal to build.
I am intending to run a Company with all three types of loads, Flats, Reefer and Dry Vans.
In your Opinion as a Driver what would make the Best Company to drive for?
How much would you want to make Gross? If you could set a fix Check for every week what will that be? Please be reasonable. We all love to make a Million each week.
Type Equipment?
1. Mack (If use Macks, be the Rawhides), Petes, KW, Freightliner (Classic, Century, Etc)
2. Trailer type/Types of loads? (Flatbed, Reefer, DryVan or Does it really matter?)
Any other Information you would like to have in a Company that make you want to stay there.
What will make the Best Company

I'll tell you what will make the Company good more profitable for you and better for drivers....
1. a Restriction on Experience 5 year minnum will lower your accident rate espically backing related accidents..
2. PLANNING... make sure your load planner or Dispatcher's competely Understand how to calculate Averages, for Time and speed for a Solo Driver to correctly plan a delivery time
3. Use MS Streets and Trips or some mapping software to calculate the paid miles for the load then pay hub to the Driver with a +-10 miles of the calculated mileage
4. APU's will save you money and reduce maintenance costs..
5. Make sure you have enough dispatchers to Properly Cover the amount of Drivers you employ
6. Make it a point with your Dispatchers to Get to know their drivers and Reinforce DO NOT LIE.. We are big boys tell us like it is, if were suppose to be getting home and something happens that delays that tell us up front don't spring it on the driver at the last minute,
7. Detention pay $20.00per hour
8. Layover Pay $100.00 per day (at 34cpm we have the potential to earn $200+ a day so $100.00 is reasonable)
9. Be Strict about On time Deliveries and Pickups.. if you have someone who is constantly late 1st tell them that he/she is in hot water if things don't improve then get rid of them because they aren't doing their job
10. Reimburse Showers they are less than $10 bucks and sometimes we may not be able stop where we fueled last to get a shower that night..
What i am pointing out to you is to show that u want us working For you and not just to make Revenue for the company and that you care about us working there, it will cost you more money to hire new drivers than it will to Retain Good Drivers... Retention is key
at least that is my ideal of what a company should be like... -
Ok the perfect company doesn't exist but a good company can make it if you are HONEST. Thats the key to makeing a driver happy is be honest and upfront and tell them the good the bad and the ugly all of it don't white wash it and don't lie to them and fire any one you catch lieing to you. That simple fact will go farther than anything. Now look at where are you going to get your loads. Broker or own contract. if you are dealing with brokers you can foget it you will not make unough to make money. If you have to use brokers comeing back to your main out bound shipper thats one thing but not both ways. Equipment is your choice drivers will drive a wheel barrow if you treat them right and show them the respect they desirve. Now pay scale is something i brought up along time ago i would pay percentage of the net. of the truck. figure up the expences of that truck takeing into consideration there percentage of the office overhead and then pay them a percentage of the profit that truck makes. it gives them a feel thay are part of the company and can control there own destany.

Thank you both for your response. I'll post my thoughts I have already later to see if others will post. For I already had some ideas what I want to do pay wise which would be fair, and cover the delays and layovers. As I said my Idea may sound as a Dream, but all biz starts from a dream.
I've worked out my Numbers, and it is doable. Just take time.
Truckin Juggalo- At the current Idea I have, it would be an Average of 40 cents per mile I'll be paying, not counting bonuses, and pay raises to come. I do intend monthly bonuses based on many things. Later on you'll understand my idea better when I explain it fully.
kd5drx Your Correct, the Perfect Company does not, yet. Well Nobody perfect, just can do the best we can. And that all I would ask.
One thing I had already set in my mind, is honesty is the best Policy. I've proven that many times to my self. I want a Driver to be honest with me and I will be honest with them. I also will have a True Open door policy, and encourage drivers to come talk with me, or I'll go out looking for them. I want feed back all the time, so I can continue to improve.
First it will be broker loads, In the beginning it will not be easy. Yet I do plan on my own contract, but I want to build up truck to cover first. Even after I start to hire, and once I have dispatchers who can keep the trucks moving, I will go out some my self, till I no longer can. When I do, if I run across any of my drivers, they will have a meal bought for them.
I have expressed my idea to 2 drivers well one current driver and one retired driver, and both like the idea, with the retired did have some reservation, but liked the idea overall.
