Im not bent, i am actually glad someone can make money trucking but the rates i hear of here on this post are so out of the ballpark with what most others are getting.
I guess its a matter of operating costs as to what is cheap freight, for me 2.00 / mi is the beginning, would i like more sure but sitting at home also cost money ins truck payments etc dosnt stop when your sitting at home,,, for others i guess its 3 or 4 a mile I just dont ever hear or see that.
As long as im not loosing money and making some at 2.00 or more a mile ill run verses making none at all and truely loosing money sitting home, waiting for 3 or 4 bucks a mile.
Now for the oil field 104 to 145,,,, around here its 110-130 per hour and usually under lease the o/o gets 70-75 percent of that unless the o/o is supplying the trailer then maybe 80 percent and that figures out to way less than 3-4 per mile around here.
what would you charge for this haul?

What are the other guys charging? That would be my first contact in regards to rates in your particular area for the that particular job. You want the job, talk to some of the guys already doing it. I would hate to be the guy that comes in and low balls everyone else. And too high, your out. It is very difficult to price any load right now just off of the top of ones head. I would talk to someone that is already doing it, which I assume there is. Don't cut yourself short, and don't go walking away looking like a fool either.

He wants to go 100% owner operators he supplys the new trailers and pays plating /tags ins etc etc for the trucks, he wants 5 trucks double shift or ten trucks single shift and ask me what i could do the haul for cost wise.
I told him 867.00 per load for me my truck and fuel.
I based it on my current job that pays me 55 / hr for me and my truck i pay only for bobtail ins,,, the trailer, fuel, plating and other ins is supplied by the company i work for.Last edited: Dec 14, 2008

Man, that's a tuff one in this current market, especially a commodity like coal. I would use those crude oil hauls as a base point. Is there any other competition on the o/op side that would come in and underbid you and your old boss?
If you guys are the only game in town, then you have a bit more leverage. Did your old boss at least give you some kind of number? And I have know idea what coal is going for, another variable.
If it was my truck, I would be in an hourly wage or by the day. In normal times, $1500 a day would be my low end number, or $136 an hour. But knowing what freight goes for in your neck of the woods, that number would probably get me laughed at.
