I have to quote a customer on a 180 mile one way (come home empty) load. This is a lot farther than my usual radius that I travel (yes I know, I've got it good). Here's the specifics: bulk commodity, loads in an hour, unloads about the same, 7 hrs to do the 360 miles, plus the 2 for ldg and unldg. Essentially will take up the whole day. Load weight, 44 tonnes, 97,000 lbs. 8 axle unit. Fuel lately running about .90 a mile (oops that's Cdn, probably more like 1.20 if you're in the US. No tolls, scales (unless a random roadside). May have to chain up on each end if we get snow before I do it. What do you think it should cost this customer ( I do a few loads for him every year, but this one is outside of my normal rate parameters that's why I am asking for ideas). Thanks.

i would have to charge at least $900 preferably i would want to be about 1100 on that haul unless i could pre load something for the next day or something like that after i made it back.

You have to ask what your other fixed costs are.
HOW far out of your normal area are you going?
Is this something that might become regular business with this customer? That might play on your negotiations.
But, yeah,$900 - $1200 might not be out of the realm of possibility.

FYI you've got the fuel cost backwards. .90CDN is around .69USD.

Would this be a daily run? 900-1200 like others said sounds reasonable. All depends on your overall cost tho.

Other than Swaan, you guys are thinking in US dollars right? I need to take that into consideration because to make the CDN equivalent I have to add 30%. $900 US becomes $1170 CDN.

    misterG Thanks this.
