I would more than likely go into operations/dispatch/planning preferably for the company I am with at this time… we drivers make great dispatchers. We know the road; we know how this whole thing operates.

I would LOVE to make this happen, and be "surprised" by the money I make!

Might still be able to pull it off.

And I agree with the John Deere guy.....I'm through with buses, and crawling through the hatch behind the rear bench seats to get at the engine and top of the transmission....

I dispatched for awhile and it’s the worst job I’ve ever had. Here are some highlights.

Driver thought he could go around the fast food restaurant and got stuck. Had to call cops and close down a 5 lane road.

Drivers mix up trailer numbers on the reg.

Driver lost his dry van door on the interstate because he forgot to close it.

Actually had a driver one time always late. Found out he parked for the entire school zone time like 7-9am instead of just driving slow.

All day every day just putting out fires.

Depends on what your other skills and interests are .

    I’ve been :
Draftsman , park ranger , owner operator, maintenance supervisor at a hospital , facility manager at a conference center , and Enviromental field technician taking soil and water samples around leaky underground fuel tanks and a factory worker , and a couple other occupations .

I’m 27 now, so at ive so far done welding, ironwork, now trucking. If I were old like your post suggest:

    - be a fishing guide (crappie) on a big local lake
    - trade stocks
    - get into building high end furniture / decorations
    - professional poker player (used to make 1.5k a week before I had kids)

I stopped working on trucks well over a decade ago. Went heavy equipment and now more or less stick with hydraulics exclusively.

That's a job that enables to be home every day or night, depending on the shift, maybe better from local driving around a big city like Chicago, which is never fun but overall it is hardly a career change.
At some places they indeed must be quite distressed. I remember arriving to some grocery DC and there I was supposed to drop the trailer at a specific numbered spot but there was another trailer in it. I asked a random jockey to move it for me, he said that he was already 5 "moves" behind and still 100 to go before the shift end, or something like that. It did not feel like he blew me off at all, just was unable to afford to help me out. LOL
