Hello,
I normally don't drive over the road much (Usually Local). I noticed I was starting to get some un-even wear on my steer tires a couple of weeks ago.
Well I had to make a quick trip about 6-7 hours from home (450 miles Away). I stopped about 4 hours into my trip and noticed my outside edge of both steers is really starting to wear wrong now. My truck has new king pins from KW about 15K ago too. but suddenly these tires are wearing bad quick. I assume its an alignment issue. No visible issues that I can see and both hubs have plenty of oil. I was reading that it could be my rear alignment.
I have to pick up my load in the morning (then can head home) but I'm debating if I should drive back to my local shop 7 hours away or extend my stay and go to unfamiliar shop. Who knows when I can get in somewhere.
My tires have 4/32 in all the groves but can't really tell how much is on that edge.![]()

Might be because the new kingpins are causing them to wear different.
4/32 is worn out anyway.
Once they start wearing whacked, there is no going back though, they'll just get worse.
I'm guessing you did have a 3 axle done when you did the kingpins?OldRed98 Thanks this. -
I didn't really question Kenworth when they replaced my King Pins. I assumed that aligning the truck was a no brainer.... Then again I decided to not take my truck back there for quality issues.
Sorry.... Meant that none of my tread depth is less than 4/32.... I have way more tread. My steers didn't have much wear at all. This sudden tire wear just got bad quick. I was a little surprised to stop today and see that the tire has been wearing so fast. Can't really tell how much is left on the outside groove.
Going to a shop on the road is a pain though. -
Turn em around on the wheel and get the other shoulder's wear out of them at least!
bryan21384, Expeditor and OldRed98 Thank this. -
Good Call on turning them around! Caterpillar Cowboy, You're in Wyoming....You recommend any shops in Rock Springs Wyoming area? That's where I am.

I'd get ahold of Peterbilt of Wyoming in the morning, they are a top notch outfit in my book. Head north on 191, hang a left on Yellowstone right before you get to Wyoming Machinery and the highway shop and they're there on your left a little ways up Yellowstone.
I picked up a used side dump from them this fall, had an hour or so to hang out and chat with Mike, that branch's manager, while their shop changed some fittings to make the trailer's hydraulics play nicely with my truck's. Long time family owned business the state and they really care about their work and realize that good work for a first time customer will lead to repeat business. After some experiences with other dealerships they rocketed to the top of my book!OldRed98 Thanks this. -
I am actually in a few months going to be relocating my main shop and yard about 45 miles which should put me in their territory for parts delivery. This makes me very excited compared to the dealers whose parts delivery territory I fall into now!
OldRed98 Thanks this. -
Thanks Caterpillar Cowboy! That Peterbilt dealer isn't too far from me. Hopefully they could get me in and out in a day. 2 new steers and an alignment.
I honestly don't recall when I first noticed my un-even tread wear. It wasn't bad up until maybe the last 1500 miles (I drove 500 of those today). Today I could really see the tread coming off. I underestimated and should have gotten in before leaving town. Then again I worry a bit too much too. I just don't like messing around with a steer tire.
