    Hey all
Been reading this forums posts for a long time and find them very informative. I have a question for all willing to respond, i need a second opinion and advice.
I am currently taking a refresher course at a trucking school in Minnesota. I have also been looking and calling different companies about jobs when i am through. I have very little driving experience other
than some weekend parttrime work i did 2 years ago and my current refresher course.I am currently in contact with two potential companies to start work for. The first one is a local daycab outfit that would
send me to their school for 6 weeks learning their way and pulling doubles. They want a 2 year committment if i go with them. The second is a local/otr outfit that said as long as i pass my road test i can
start with them. When my refresher is done i am confident i will pass the road test.
My question is should i look towards a company that offers more training or should i jump in and give it my best shot?
I am leaning towards company #2 because it offers exposure to both aspects of driving and no commitment if it doesnt work out.
Dont get me wrong, i am not looking to jump ship, just dont need the added pressure of the commitment.
Hope this makes sense, thanks in advance to all that respond

The first thing is deciding if you want to be local or otr. They are 2 entirely different animals. Pulling doubles can be extremely tricky at times, I've been told. I prefer otr, for a number of reasons, so without having any more specific info, like pay and benefits, that'd be my choice.

I personally would never get myself in a situation where I was obligated to stay with a company for a set amount of time. Things happen in life that are out of our control so take care of what you can control. Try OTR and if you don't like it, take a local gig. You gain the experience and get to experience life on the road. Certainly no harm in trying it.

Going off my job (which is local)

Pay = $19.27/hr to start with a .57 cent raise every 6 months

    Bennies =

Retirement pension (no 401k). The employer matches your weekly deposits on a annual basis. Example: put 5% down from every check and the employer takes the annual total and puts in 5%.

    Health care =

Costs you roughly $60/month depending on the options you select. No deductible either

I do agree about local OTR being 2 different animals. Not too many drivers can handle the demands of a local job.

Then again some prefer local. Or in my case, what I call Micro-regional. Major shippers like Kraft and M&M Mars/Dove = large docks. (lots of room to maneuver)

I also agree that a two year indentured servitude is daunting.

I'd go with option 2. Two years is a long time to commit to a carrier. What are the consequences if you quit before 2 years is up?

I would also go with number 2.
