Boss approached me today about a new truck. I'm on the fence about it. I'm currently in a 2020 Western Star 4900ex day cab which I love. It's a glider with a 6nz, 18 speed. Kinda overkill for what I'm doing, but It's only got 350k miles, and I put them all on it. I was hoping to wear this one out.
The new truck is a Pete 567 day cab, with the X15 Cummins and a 10 speed. I feel for what I do the specs are about perfect. But I'm not a big fan of the interior of the truck. I hate the dash layout with some of the switches to the left of the steering wheel and some to the right. That, and the dash reminds me of a Freightliner Columbia that's held together with clips instead of screws. I can foresee that being a rattletrap. However, it's not all bad, as the Pete does have some nice cupholders and storage spots for my phone, wallet and whatever. That is something the Western Star lacks And I'm not liking the idea of dealing with DEF, and the probability of emissions issues. We currently have two of these trucks, and the drivers say they ride really nice, but they've only got 30k on them, so I'd expect that. The big question is how's it gonna be after a couple hundred thousand miles of Pennsyltucky roads? I know what the Western Star is like after stuff starts wearing, and it ain't half bad.
I have the option of passing on it, and staying in my current truck. Or I can switch out and watch this truck get neglected.
So to you experienced guys, would you give up an old school type truck for a new cookie cutter? Give up a truck with a hood on it for a slope nose? Either way the pay is the same lol. But what would y'all do?
To add: I'm not brand loyal by any means. I don't care who's emblem is on the hood. I care about functionality

My experience with the 567 is I always liked the look of them on the outside . Pretty sharp rides as far as aero trucks go, but the same as you I couldnt stand the interior of the truck. The dash layout sucks. The gauges on the right side I find they are laid out in such a weird way it kept me from looking at them. The digital dash is ugly as hell. I also didn't like the shifter having that weird bend in it. I ground more gears in that truck then any truck I ever drove. And yes it does become a rattle trap. Although most of the rattles I had, seemed to come from the bunk , so maybe in a daycab you won't have that... me personally I'd like to stay in the glider... but if it's that big a deal and the money's the same either way, I guess a guy could find a different hill to die on. Trucks just a tool to do the job at the end of the day

Yeah I mean I know there's worse dilemmas in life to have.
After spending a little over a million miles in these Western Star's, I guess I'm just partial to them. Just not sure I'm gonna like the change if I do switch. But I got a month to think about it, and they're giving me a week of running it to decide either way. -
It may sound silly to some, but I understand the dilemma. It doesn't matter what kind of truck it is, when you put hundreds of thousands of miles on it, it's hard to let it go. It's like it becomes a part of you.
At my last job, I drove a 2017 Prostar. Nothing special, had a Cummins and a 13 speed. It had about 200k on it when I got it, it was filthy and neglected. I got all the issues fixed and cleaned it up like new. I spent the next four years in that truck, took good care of it and kept it nice and clean. Had a couple opportunities in that time to move into a new truck, but declined every time.
I had too much sweat and blood put into that truck... I knew every quirk, every squeak and rattle. I didn't have the heart to let her go. LOL.... plus it would have made my blood boil to watch some new guy get into my old truck and tear it up after I worked so hard to keep it nice.
On the other hand, if you pass on the new truck then you might have to watch it go to someone less deserving, and they will probably just trash it. So that kinda sucks too.The_vett, silverspur, MACK E-6 and 5 others Thank this. -
Yeah I'm kind of attached to this truck I guess. Have a rough history with it. I didn't want it from the start. They twisted my arm and I gave in. Then I watched as my old truck got flopped over. I could've cried over that. I put a lot of effort into keeping that truck pristine, inside and out. Then two months later, some idiot pulled out in front of me, so I had my first crash in this truck. Like I said, I've been through a lot since I got this truck. And I am not afraid to admit, I'm attached to it.
As far as the new one goes, if someone else takes it and trashes it, it won't bother me at all.The_vett, Feedman, silverspur and 3 others Thank this. -
Keep the older truck that's the best engine ever made. It's got instant power on tap and can pass everything on the highway except a fuel stop, but that's not your problem the boss will take care of it. New trucks with DEF, EGR etc can't pull a greasy string out of a hog's ###. Downshifting going uphills empty, ridiculous. Regens...

Are you reading the news?This is no time to be buying a truck, we in for a heap o' trouble, and the very absolute LAST thing you need is a new truck payment. What are we talkin' here, $2,,$300grand? Please, reconsider this, we think of you as one of our "buds", and we hate to see you regret this. Keep the old gal, remember, "it's cheaper to keep her",,,
