We run about 9 trucks. Our newest driver I actually put in our nicest truck. He was an ok hustler but had a problem controlling his advances and making little repairs on the road without approval. Well last week I had him a load from TX to FL. He delivered it late Sunday evening. I told him saturday I would load him out of there monday back to NC. Well while in TX he said the a/c went out, no problem we paid TA to fix it. Well its monday morning and I call to tell him I got him a load out of FL coming back home paying pretty good for this time of the year. He informs me he is already 300 miles north and is heading home cause the a/c quit and its too hot for him. Now he never called to tell me it quit or anything just decided on his own to deadhead my truck 800 miles. How would you have handled the situation?

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
What would you have done?

If he deadheaded my truck 800 miles he would be unemployed. I would also fix his DAC report so he remained unemployed.Everett and cherokee96red Thank this.

Suspend him.
There should be progressive discipline.BIG RIGGER Thanks this. -
Sounds like he forgot who owned the truck. Thats what owners are for, to make those kind of decisions, not the newbie driver. What other expensive decision will he make down the road without authorization?

It sounds to me that you already fired him. -
take 800 miles of fuel out of his last paycheck
-
I fired him as soon as he hit the yard and the fuel he used for his personal trip came out of his pay. What was worse was we actually had a load out of FL paying us $1.80 a mile to come home on.
stranger Thanks this. -
Next thing ya know he will be on the forum whining about getting fired for no reason...............
-
Thats what I would have done.....as mentioned above report his actions to DAC also..
-
Yep and how he had to run with no a/c
Poor baby...
