My husband mentioned to me last night about getting a cell phone. Right now we have Nextel because that's what his company has so he has his # programmed into my Nextel. It's a real hassle with having to buy those prepaid cards and I never know when he's going to be "out of the area" and I can't get through to him. We'll just use this in case of emergency or very rarely. Also my husband stays in the state and our credit is less than perfect. Any suggestions?

The magic question is, How often do you plan on using it? If you don't use it more then 2-4 times a week. You would be better off to buy a prepaid phone from ATT, called the GO phone. If your going to be using it more then the 2-4 times a week. I would call Nextel and see if they give a discount because of your husbands employer.
I use ATT cheapest plan they have. I only get 450min a month and 5000min for nights/weekends. It costs me with my previous employer discount about $37 a month. My use for it during the weekdays is limited to important calls though my Dad does happens to call and chat sometimes. Nights and weekends I call anybody and everybody. I have all the text messages features turned off. The biggest thing I like about ATT is the rollover minutes. Depending on the minutes you didn't use from last months weekdays plan(450 in my case). They get rolled over to your next months bill. This keeps happening every month. You have a year from that month to use those minutes. I will never worry about running out of minutes. I currently have 1200 rollover minutes. One more thing. I bought the cheapest phone ATT had displayed. I bought a $49.99 phone outright. I still had to have a year contract but my year has been up for awhile. It just continues month to month. I don't have any phone insurance on it. If I break the phone, I will not lose sleep over a $50 phone.
The best suggestion is to shop around and see what plans best suite you and your husband.

I wanted to get away form the prepaid phone cards. With the Nextel I'd go to use it only to get a recording saying I was out of minutes. Is the Go phone any better than that? I don't like unpleasant surprises. I dont' think I'd use it daily but maybe a few times a week at most.

Verizon with mobile to mobile.
We have 1400 any time minutes combined and unlimited mobile to mobile. Also unlimited nights and weekends. -
I use Verizon my self and my wife has the same. our calls to each other don't count ATT has the same plan i think. We talked about who the best carrier was a while back. And for best coverage Verizon & ATT were at the top. So that is where I would look. Free nights (after 9pm Local time)and weekends.
Happy hunting young lady. -
I used to have Sprint, and while it was great if you stayed close to a populated area, once you got off the beaten path, service dropped to nil in a hurry. Now with Verizon and I've been pretty happy so far with the coverage. I have the unlimited voice/text plan and I think I'm going to end up coming out on the better end of that deal. **GRIN**
