I've read a lot of good things about the new Volvo/Mack motors. People having very few issues with them. I would like to know what guys do who run mostly short haul stuff with a lot of stop and go who run these new trucks. Do they have problems?

Read the title of this thread and thought somebody was starting a pool. Was hoping 2071 wasn't taken. Of course, I wouldn't be around to collect if I won.

I drive old iron an idle . if idling is a killer on the new engines what do you all do on warming up the motor in the morning. I don't move my truck till the engine temp hits 150. I have seen engines fly apart if you didn't warm them up.

I can only speak for me. I have a 2015 with an APU. I try not to idle and that basically means I don't idle overnight or just leave it idling for hours. Anyone who says they don't idle at all I don't know how. I warm my truck up for 15-20 every day regardless. A few times a day I'll have to idle for a 30 or a fuel stop or if I'm not at a shipper for long. Mine has given me no trouble at all.

I think it's just as bad to constantly shut off and start up a truck. I don't cut mine off until it cools down a bit after driving it under load.

    Yeah 2016 780 455XE motor,

Just turned 430,000mi and had never spent a day in the shop for emissions problems.

Only one DPF cleaning so far, just shy of 400k and the dealer said the filter was extremely clean and really didn't even need it.

The truck has a bunk heater and battery AC APU , it doesn't idle like allot of trucks do.

I really think the idling thing plays a huge role, as well as engine oil choice resulting in toxic metal oxides clogging and degrading the emissions system. (ZDDP is a big culprit)

The other item is you need to change your coalescing air dryer every 6 months and the def filter on the pump at least once a year.

    I have a 2012 Freightliner with a dd15 . Have had it from
    432000 to 770000
I've had some problems but nothing to major
These are the things it had to go to the dealer for
    Def blader and pump $1500
    DPF filters $3500
    Coroded wires $550

    I did a NOX sensor myself $275
    I have an APU
Only you can answer this next question .
Can you go without idling at all (20 min max ) ?
If the answer is no you need an APU or a 2016 or newer . But even on the 2016 or newer you will probably shorten the life of your DPF filters . Make sure AUTO ELEVATE is turned on .

Question to those that say they don’t idle. Do you run north in the winter and cold start in low temps? I guess it’s mandatory to have a diesel fired block heater with a emissions engine?

Eastern Idaho, and we haven't plugged it in yet. No problems starting down to -10 (coldest we've run into) as long as the fuel isn't slushy.....
