I have a 2005 Freightliner Columbia with a Mercedes MBE 4000 and mercedes tranny. It's an automatic transmission.
It's sitting at a Freightliner facility waiting for repair right now. They are saying that we need to replace a coupler and possibility the clutch. They want to charge
$900 for the coupler
$600 for the labor
If we have to replace the clutch on the automatic transmission, our total would go up to another $3000 (includes part and labor).
So, my questions are:
1) what's a clutch coupler?
2) Should it that expensive to replace an automatic transmission (with an MBE engine & tranny)? It only cost me $1500 to replace my kw t660 transmission (18 speed manual).
Thanks,
Darren

If you have a Meritor Freedomline 12 spd, the parts are hard to find, and expensive. That transmission is not being made anymore from what I have heard. The weak point in the Meritor is the clutch. Where an Eaton auto uses the clutch to only start and stop, the Meritor clutches with every shift, causing a lot of wear. I have driven the Meritor quite a bit, and they are smooth shifting transmissions with a close ratio, but are costly to maintain.

how much gears (also reverse c) is it syncro? is it 2 or 3 pedal ?
i ask this becouse mb has lot of truck transmission over there
they are 9 (c+4+4) syncro as manual and eps
16 ( 4+4 +split) syncro also offered as manual eps( telligent) and automated with 3 pedal
12 ( 3+3 +split) non syncro ( automated)
and 16 4+4+split) non syncro ( automated)
eps( telligent ) is semi automated gearbox first before starting you select gear than press clutch and start in driving you select next gear and when you press clutch than gear is changed and ........
you have only yoystick with + and - spliter and two buttons ( for R and N and some special functions like skiping 2gears -2 full gears not 2xhalf )
and searching gear
this is invented in 1985 first on zf gearboxes on mercedes benz latter on mb g box .......( from 1990~) -
98989 He doesn't have an MB transmission its either an Eaton or a Meritor. I think the OP is saying he has a 2 pedal setup with what some people call a slipper style or snowmobile style clutch.
The coupler is the assembly that acts like a clutch pedal when you are stopped, its the part that activates the clutch by engine RPM. IMO the 2 pedal setup sucks ### because its one more spendy part to break. The 3 pedal setup with the smart shift works just as good and uses a normal clutch.
