A typical day for this local driver....
Arrive at terminal approx. 5:30 am, finish drinking coffee.
6:00 - punch in, grab bills and examine, look for hazmat issues like poison and food or cyanides and corrosives loaded together, nuclear densometers without all the required info in the description, or missing emergency response numbers. Walk down dock, check load for securement or more hazmat issues like flammables and oxidizers loaded next to each other, throw pallet jack and hand truck on trailer, close trailer door. Go out to lot, fire up my truck and hook up, do pretrip inspection, and hopefully be rolling out by 6:30.
8:45-9:00 - reach peddle territory and start running route, oftentimes depending on how much junk freight is in board finishing up at 12:30-1:30. Take 1/2 hour nap if it’s early. Do what few pickups I get if I have any, then maybe 1 or 2 more on the way home.
4:00-4:30 - Usually rolling back in the yard by now. Put trailer in door, do post trip inspection, lock up pallet jack and hand truck. Get fuel if it’s Wednesday or fuel and DEF if it’s Friday. Vacuum floor after fueling. Wash truck either if it’s dirty or it’s Friday. If it’s Friday grab good dolly for Saturday run and park. Walk up to office, turn in bills and trip report, punch out.
Wash, rinse, repeat.tucker, Lumper Humper, Air Cooled and 1 other person Thank this. -

I started at a new company recently, so far my schedule has been 7am - 3pm/4pm. It's a myth that local trucking consists of nothing but 14 hour days. In five years driving locally, I've probably worked 12 hours or more less than a dozen times. If you want to work long hours, that's great! I wish drivers would stop telling people long hours are your only option if you want to go local. It's just not true. More "normal" hours exist in local trucking.
Mike2633, Gearjammin' Penguin, Dumdriver and 2 others Thank this.
