Title says it all. I've never bought a smartphone before, but I think I'm gonna need one. What's a good monthly data amount to get and does anyone have a recommendation on which phone to get?
What's a good amount of mobile data for a phone?

My recommendation for phone is.
Go to a Sprint/ATT/Verizon store or whatever carrier you go with and play with the phones and pick one you like.
Data, really depends and what you're going to be doing with phone.
Tethering/Hotspot is going to up your data quite a bit.
I do a lot of Internet and downloading and stuff I am on an old unlimited plan. I use 20-40 gigs a month. -
Basic smartphone browsing and stuff and downloading apps, the basic 5gig plan will probably suffice. But if you plan on using the hotspot feature or tethering to stream video such as netflix or YouTube videos on occasion, better plan on 20 gig+ plans which are hard to find but they are out there and discussed elsewhere on this forum in another section
Richter Thanks this. -
Just get unlimited then it won't matter how much u use. Sprint has unlimited talk, text, and web . Its like $50 for talk and text unlimited and $30 for the data. But never worry about going over

Netflix can chew up the better part of a gigabyte per movie...
-
Yep like everyone above said it all depends on what you plan to do with it. I have a share plan with verizon 6gb between me and my wife and we never go over. But we don't watch movies or nothing, just surf the web and Facebook stuff like that. If you just gonna use it for google maps and Facebook and basic web surfing then 5 gb is probably enough. If you plan on streaming movies and whatnot then is probably go unlimited.

Just realize many of the "unlimited" plans are useless in some areas. They can have "roaming" areas where data is unavailable or terribly slow. You may be throttled back each day once you reach a certain data amount threshold and have to wait until next day to get decent speed (for a while). Generally, you get what you pay for (or don't pay for)

Can you say.......
Jk not gonna turn this into a Carrier War, gonna leave this up to someone else.
I honestly don't have a big issue.
I have 4gLTE almost everywhere.
And no throttling. -
I use a lot of data that why I only use unlimited plans, Ive never tried tmobile but have used sprint for many years.
-
Sprint service sucks and isnt fast enough to use all your unlimited data.
