I too would go with a credit union. I have had no problems with mine, My last bank I dealt with wanted to charge for nearly everything.
What's a good bank to bank with?

With online banking it doesn't really matter. You can get direct deposit and pay your bills online. Get a debit/check card (with a visa or mastercard logo) to pay for some stuff and bring cash from home for the rest and the bank doesn't matter. Many of the bigger banks even have smart phone apps for banking as well (Chase, BofA, Wells Fargo etc).
CondoCruiser Thanks this. -
i think Schwab is a good one; Free checks, online billpay ATM fee reimbursement. No minimums, although the rate is not that high---.25% i think.
i've heard alot of bad things about bank of america but i will say that they totally went to bat for me when i accidentally left my atm card in one of their atms. Apparently someone used my card in that machine and took $600. Well, BoA reimbursed me completely.
A good atm machine should always eject your card after each transaction OR ask if you want another transaction and ask for the PIN for each transaction. What happened in my case was i just walked away and forgot my card. The machine apparently asked if "i"/the person after me if they wanted another transaction and so forth. Since my card and PIN was already entered, they took that maximum daily withdraw amount after what i had taken out. -
I also go with Chase, been with then since 1992 and never had an issue with them as far as banking and my mortgage. They are world wide. -
Credit Union !!!!

What ever you pick, I would pick a bank/cu that is convenient when you are at home. I live in a small town and know everyone in my bank. You don't get personal attention at these big nationwide chains. Online banking is a truckers friend.
The thing is to pay your bills online or autopay. Stay away from ATM's because you get charged at both ends. Use your debit card and get cash back if needed. You also get the choice of debit or credit. Always say credit because it's free. Some banks saying debit cost you a dollar. -
I am happy with US BANK... free check card, free bill pay, internet banking...
And the local branch still knows me when I occasionally walk in. -
Whatever you do credit union is a lower cost to you over a bank US Bank raped me and Bank America wasn't very nice either!
One thing to learn now is banking is changing for the worse for it's customers!
Swiping charges and cost to use an ATM out of system. The cost of ATM use is going to go up very soon to almost $5 a use out of system and in the near future to $10. This was reported by the WSJ a few weeks ago.
On line banking:
NOTE:
DO NOT USE A WIFI to access your bank! WIFI is NOT secure even if you see HTTPS in the URL! WIFI signal itself can be hijacked and your signal copied and read as if you gave it to a theft!
If you need money and "supplies" then head to a WalMart or Kmart or a store and use your debit card and then get cash back. You will bypass the ATM fee! Stay away from an ATM! Most will let you get $100 when you buy anything.
Learn to keep your hand out of your wallet! If your company allows you to advance off the fuel card for free then get your "allowance" that way but I know for a fact that you can do almost everything you need to do on $150 a week! That's eat, scale, tolls, and BS snacks. If you spend money on the company I would every time it reached $20 I would get it back when I fueled. But I always, if not home would stop at Walleys place get my water, paper towels, coffee and filters and other stuff and then get my wife approved allowance which was actually $100 a week!
But the bank thing is, use a bank found in many locations that aren't going to charge you an arm and a leg in service charges. Do your research on them on their web sites. If you have no checking account then ask your company who they use and get yours through them as it'll all be in house! Direct Deposit and do your banking on line with your secure broadband card.
Those ATMs in truck stops....STAY AWAY! Truck stops are NOT the place to buy anything or use many of their services as they are way over priced for what you get!
That ComData ATM network is a blood sucker! The ONLY thing you should use or buy at any truck stop is restaurant, free showers, fuel, bathroom and CB equipment! If ANYTHING can be bought at Walley World, Kmart, Target or a store at or cheaper than any truck stop then go there! Really why pay so much more?
Also apply for 1 credit card that will give you enough to be able to fly, bus or rent a car home from the farthest point in the US! This is one of my firm driver rules! That card is not for toys or anything else but to get you home in case of emergency if your company will not get you there or if you get fired in BFE and they still refuse to get you home! It's happened and it'll keep on happening! If you have no credit then use it and put $20-$50 on it and pay it off each month. Just never use it like a cash cow as it's your back up to get home. Also the TSA frowns on you if you walk in for a flight with cash in hand! Red flag time! Also you can not rent a car with cash!
Just a few tips for you as it's relevant to your question! -
Your air card signal can also be captured, so can the packets of information crossing the internet, your banks/credit union computer can be hacked, or information stolen by a employee....
US BANK has never charged me a dime that was not disclosed first...
No charge for in network ATM... No charge checking. No charge internet bill pay...
Yes a credit union is USUALLY cheaper...
and better for a small loan...
Get all the cash I need from my fuel card each week when I fuel.. no charge..
Rollover has good info, and his experience with the bank is much different than mine...
But mine was NOT an original US BANK.Rollover the Original Thanks this.
