What doesn't get factored into these discussions most times, is the entire package. While that $1 plus FSC may seem really low, the package may be actually fairly good. One has to look at things like....
Are there discounts on fuel below the cash pump price on top of the FSC? That can be considerable, and some carriers will have, on their website, a listing of all fuel stops (both in network and out of network) that show current cash pump pricing (updated every two hours) and the discounts being offered, so that one can make sure they are buying the cheapest fuel along their run. And what of additional stop off compensation? Some get some very good stop off compensation. I get $100 per extra stop. What about detention? Is it a fight to get it, or is it even compensated when the truck owner does not even file for it? What about being compensated for base plate cost? Are all tolls paid for? Not just reimbursed, but actually paid for as they happen. And are the rates being paid per mile, on a scale based on length of haul, with the shorter runs paying substantially more per mile than the longer runs? Are all IFTA taxes not only filed by the carrier, but any owed taxes covered by the carrier also, with no charge to the truck owner? When doing incidental work, like shuttling a trailer or some other form of local type work, is there a per hour compensation rate? And then there is discounts for parts and tires that may be available. These are things that make up the package I have.
There can be a heck of a lot more than just mile rate and FSC to a carrier package. How the other items play out can make a total package well worth being with a carrier. Even the customer base comes into play. That can make substantial difference in the amount of wasted time. And is there a lot of drop and hook, so that one is being more productive. Sometimes, being with a carrier may actually be better than being on one's own.
What's a good rate being leased to a mega?

I was leased onto a agent of us xpress. I averaged 1.70 all miles, with no trailer to maintain, .an average of .30 cents discount per gallon on fuel . Drop and hook most of the time. Insurance was cheap, repairs were cheaper with their discounts. Yes I got #### talked to me on the cb all the time but at the end of the day I was laughing... Because it's not the best rate ever but there's owner ops out there with their own authority running for 1.40 a mile lol now that's funny

Im not a lease operator. I haul logs with just a regular old dot number no authority. Home every night and off weekends. Liability insurance only. The hardest part of my day is sleeping in my own bed hahaha -
Time for everyone to stop talking s||t and let's see some profit and loss statements posted, I see everybody saying they would sit for days before they haul for that, and then everyone talking about how low of rate it is, but I never have seen what someone is really making or even hardly seen a load paying more than 1.77 a mile average off of the load boards unless it is going to the Northeast then it's a low rate coming out...
Lone Ranger 13 Thanks this.
