What's a reasonable otr cpm for a brand new driver

    That's fine but you should post that because your pay wasn't based on the $.36 a mile alone it was largely based on extras which can be misleading to a newb particularly when they're looking at van work. She hears $.36 a mile and you say you made that and brought home $1200 a week that's misleading in this context. $.36 a mile sucks period.

    So you should send someone out on the road for crap pay because they have no experience? I understand everyone has to start somewhere but $.36 a mile is crap. As if I hired someone with zero experience I would train them to get them going. This has NOTHING to do with experience it has to do with getting cheap labor because you bid your freight cheap to get it. You can't keep 5000 trucks rolling bidding freight at a high rate.

    At .36 cpm, $40,000/year is 111,0000 miles or averaging 2136 miles/week and that's before any accessory pay. Conversely to make the same at $12/hr, one would have to work 56 hours a week to get enough overtime to make the same amount. Personally, I would rather be up in a truck making closer to 50,000 a year with my weekends off than working 7 days a week in a hot factory.

    You don't have to be in a hot factory to make that and you can make more than $12 an hour a lot of places. The stress of the road isn't worth $40,000 a year.

    @Hoosier_Girl husband should consider tankers and just bypass the old "paying your dues" companies. I remember a student last year that had a choice of Girton Propane Service or Trimac Transportation at graduation. He chose Trimac, but either would have been ok.
    Girton hauls agricultural chemicals. Here's some more besides those two that hire new cdl grads:

    Not where I live. It's a very depressed area economically. You're either a farmer or work in a factory. I have two degrees and have had a hell of a time finding meaningful employment with any type of longevity. It's part of the reason why I decided to make this massive career jump.

    @johndeere4020, you're losing you're credibility. Furthermore, OTR is not for everybody, and it should be noted no one is putting a gun to anyone's head forcing them to do OTR and be away from family. OTR is ideal for some, but not recommended for others. So, you think we should pay 50 cpm as a "worthwhile wage" so that you can then force them into OTR and say "I'm paying you good and as such, you'll run the way I tell you to run"? Because that's what I'm hearing you say.

    Working down in the sewers is not great work other, but many do it, and most of them make far less then others working top-side. Job appeal is purely relative to the individual and for you to presume to tell others what they should find appealing and what they should not find appealing is not right on multiple levels. And the apparent idea that if a job is "not appealing" to JohnDeere, then you must pay them a higher wage, is ridiculous on it's face.

    Maybe as a store manager... $12 an hr for 2000 hrs is $24000.
