I agree no idle then where's the APU.It's not just the companies, many states have the no idling law as well.Another one of many laws targeted to the trucking industry.
Whats all this noise about idle time?

Noooo. Nothing has changed in the last year or three... or more.
Why would you think that?

Well Cowpie1,
This is not directed at you personally , i do have agree and disagree with the whole idea.
You have a valid point about spending money, but on the other hand its not reasonable to expect a hand to freeze his assets off or fry in the heat. company money or your own, If your suffering from major discomfort , your not sleeping good and getting the needed rest you need to be a safe driver. When I was trucking back in the olden days lol i ran the truck all nite when i was peeing icicles or i was able to fry an egg on the fender. your life or anyone elses are not worth a few dollars worth of fuel. and btw i was buying the fuel and it didn't amout to that much. And i certainly would not expect a driver of mine to suffer unnessecary discomfort either. We ain't getting paid to be miserable for a living... And to anyone who is so ruff and tuff that they wanna freeze their assets off and sleep in a muddy foxhole when they could be sleeping in a nice comfortable kingsize bed. I say " Have at it moron" lol
Those who think that part of our job is to be miserable , need to think again. they put a/c and heaters in trucks for a reason. Ron White said in all " YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID"... just sayin.... -
And this is why I became an owner op and got away from the companies that treat drivers like dirt. I don't have the extra $7500 sitting around to put an apu on my trucks so I expect my trucks to run all day during the winter and alot during the summer when its too hot. The main difference with me is I get my trucks home nightly or at least every weekend. -
Correct me if i am wrong and i will back up.... But don't APU's burn fuel to operate??? Last time i looked the heaters and A/C were already connected to the engine of the truck. So you don't have the extra cost and weight of an apu , when the motor does the same thing anyhow...

i mean if the pay went at or above inflation for the last 40 yrs most drivers would be making over 2k/wk or more and getting a hotel wouldnt be as big of a deal, but which otr company drivers pay for hotel rooms often when it gets too hot or cold and youre in a no idle area??? not many... close to zero.
im not an old timer, but from what i understand trucks werent shut off in the past unless there was no point in having it on...fuel prices werent a concern and neither were emissions, all of this is being pushed on us on top of everything else. resisting it is the LEAST we can do, i mean the turnover is already over 100%... only so many drivers will go out and #### near freeze on one end, or sweat all night without sleeping only to urgently wait for the next trip to be assigned.nofilter Thanks this. -
Mikeeee,
ya got me there, lol I was more or less trying to get a feel for what major changes have happened since 1990. I was driving in the old school and didn't granddaddy over when they came out with this new program. I kind of lost touch with whats happening, now i am getting an idea what i need to get edumacated about and what to expect...Pmracing Thanks this. -
I made sure the truck I bought HAD an APU on it.
The reduced wear on the engine is MORE than the incentive I wanted to have the APU. The fuel savings is a bonus.
and considering that the Yanmar engine, is rated at less than 0.1 lbs per hour consumption at load, that's at least 1/3 the fuel to 1/10 the fuel of a big engine for an evening.
234 grams is about 8 oz (weight) per hour. that would be 0.07 gallons per hour. A gallon of fuel is considered 7.15 lbs per gallon. or 114.4 oz.

You guys say that your not supposed to idle in CA but when I was at the TA in LA just as many trucks were idling there as anywhere else?
nofilter Thanks this. -
That goes to prove not all drivers in calif are stupid. its been freezing or below here for the last 2 months at least. Tell the cops to give ya their credit card and you'll be happy to rent a hotel room. lol
btw is clear pine lumber still in business in prineville? i used to pull eastbound loads out of there. way back in the days...
